Suddenly, Captain Luis threw the throttle back and we nearly stopped cold. That can mean there’s a marlin on the surface and we were excitedly scanning the sea when he was shouting “Tortuga, Tortuga” and pointing portside. Holy massive Leatherback Turtle!

Monster Tuna, miss the party
So what would happen in 2020 of course? A 310-pound yellowfin tuna was landed only three days after the Tournament. The Captain was Francisco Castillo, known locally as “Gachi” and the catch was aboard his Super panga “Regina 2,” a 26-footer. Angler Mike Witoshynsky landed the fish on the outer Gordo Banks close to San Jose del Cabo.

40th Annual Bisbee Black & Blue Tournament. Ends with Millions of Dollars Left on the Table
While there were stripers, sailfish, and smaller blues released, teams struggled to find a winning fish that would meet the 300-pound minimum. Each day there were reports of hooking and ultimately losing fish that would have exceeded 300 pounds.
Baja sportfishing on fire!
The most productive fishing this week was between San Jaime (more so for billfish) and the Pacific side in general for dorado from 5 to 20 miles up the Coast. Only a few boats headed to the Iman and some areas of the East Cape. Water temperatures are still high, reaching temps between 84 degrees and 87 degrees F.

Of great interest and excitement to larger sport fishers and yachts is the recently discovered offshore fishery that is out of reach of the traditional panga fleets in Loreto, That area has produced extraordinary large game fishing, i.e., yellowfin tuna, black, blue, and striped marlin, as well as swordfish that no one believed existed until recently.

Super cows cavort
Brothers Jesus and Gerardo Bañaga from La Playita headed out on their 23-ft. panga Friday in search of billfish, as there have been quite a few blues and blacks caught in the area.
Circling the area only once, this super cow-sized yellowfin tuna leaped out of the water and pounced on their bait. The fish ran for an hour straight, with the guys in hot pursuit, trying to avoid getting spooled.
Baja Dorado showing, finally
The water has come back to good color, still at 72- to 73-degrees, and the red crab and tuna have returned. There are dorado here and there but not like before where they followed the boat around like pests…MagBay Lodge
Baja Wahoo, Roosterfish crow-Yellowfin return
I fished again for my first limit of the season in a good afternoon bite. I usually fish alone but as per the current protocol requirements in this time of disease, I had along with me, Captain Ruben Duran. Ruben is always good company and there is no denying that having a competent and personable Capitan makes a long day on the water easier. We caught five wahoo, including a couple of double hook-ups, five small yellowfin, and a nice dorado! …Bill Erhardt
