Baja Bytes update October 2, 2024.
South Island, near SKR, continues to be a ‘hot spot’ for the smaller bluefin tuna, confirmed by Steve “Bugman” Duncan’s photo below. Tony Reyes’ latest trip produced a jackpot of limits of cabrilla, barred pargo, plus a few 450-pound black sea bass. While over at BOLA, Luis Fernando Guillen Diaz let the photos do his bragging.
Cedros’ Rosie reported sizable white sea bass, along with an exciting variety of additional catches at Cedros Sportfishing, and according to Shari Bondy, yellowfin have continued to bite at Bahía Asunción, along with some large halibut caught from shore.
Further south, from La Paz to the Tip of Baja, giant tuna, wahoo, and billfish are all included in the daily counts. If you fish Baja this week, your photo and report would be a valuable addition to our community. Please consider sharing your experiences.

Report from Steve “Bugman” Duncan: Caught Sunday at SKR. Went 1 for 2.
Didn’t see or hear anybody else hook any other tuna
Bluefin bit at SKR this morning. The bite seemed to have slowed down over the last couple days but there are still some fish around.
The fish caught today came on lively flylined sardines and were pretty line shy. 30lb flouro and size 2 hooks were working best.
There are still some yellowtail around but they are not biting all that well.
Most yellows are also being hooked on flylined sardines and slow-trolled sardines, though some are also caught using mint-colored surface iron.
Fish are moving around but good spots to look continue to be around South Island, Ribbon Kelp, and SKR, with additional activity noted in the Middle Grounds. Lots of the yellows are being found under birds.
No reports of any barracuda lately. Calico bass fishing has been really good on boiler rocks near the Middle Grounds and the backside of South Island.…Fish Dope

Bahía Asunción

The tuna bite is still very strong in Bahía Asunción, north and south of town, and not too far out. Some very nice quality fish are being caught, and everybody in town is chowing down on tuna dishes!
Lots of halibut are being caught on the beaches, too. The weather is excellent, and air temps are in the high 70s! Come on over and get some nice fresh tuna!….Shari Bondy, La Bufadora Inn

This is the beginning of the Big Gun fishing season here in Lopez Mateos. There is a Tournament Oct 10 for Wahoo from Lopez Mateos – I will see if I can find the poster for it.
Yesterday we ran out to the 23. Perfect day on the pond! No Yellowtail, no Dorado, and no Wahoo. Lots of Monterey Sardine bait balls. Lots of much smaller Yellowfin Tuna . . . a new run has come in.
Inside Mag Bay, here in Lopez so far – no shrimp and no sardines. Fishing in the Mangroves is off to a very slow start. But there is no – or very little wind, good tides and we are very hopeful for a GREAT season…Cheri King, Lopez Mateos Sportfishing +52 613 114 8044, <sannichick@gmail.com>
MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Sept.14-21, 2024

There are still some larger tuna in the area along with some pretty good schools of dorado. Sounds like a lot of the dorado are small to medium it is providing good action. There are some sailfish being caught as well. It sounds like there are still sardines for bait available at the marina. There have also been a few more wahoo being caught.

September 29th, 2024
We are now starting to see more tourist activity in our area as we head into our busy October/November season. Mornings at the marina are starting to feel a bit cooler averaging around 76-77 degrees. Temperature throughout the day is slightly down, averaging high 80s/low 90s.

The main highlight this week was the yellowfin tuna bite towards San Luis and Iman. We are seeing warm water in the 86-87 range throughout these high spots. Most of these yellowfin are juvenile, averaging around 4-5 pounds, though we have seen a few nicer ones 20-40 pounds landed in the same area. We are trying to release as many of the smaller ones as we can. We are using live and dead sardines. Most boats are catching their tuna limits every day. It would be nice to fight these fish with super light tackle, though it is almost impossible due to shark activity. We are also catching plenty of skipjacks within the same school. This week, we saw a lot more white skipjacks, which are great to eat. These were a bit bigger than the yellowfin. Within the same area, most of the boats were able to land a few dorado per day while fast trolling ballyhoo. A handful of nice wahoo were also landed on Rapalas this weekend.
A few of the local guys scouted out different rock structures at San Luis and Iman. They were able to land some nice dogtooth snapper on strips of skipjacks. A big broomtail grouper was also landed at Iman on a live skipjack.
We had a good blue/striped marlin bite towards 1150 Bank this week. Most of these bites came on the smaller lures or rigged ballyhoo. Most of the Blue marlin hooked were under 200 pounds, though there were a couple in the 300–400-pound range. There are still reports of a couple big Black marlin hooked at the Inner and Outer Gordo on live skipjacks. We have a couple boats specifically trying for Black marlin next week. Happy Birthday to Eric Brictson; you are greatly missed every day!…Good Fishing, Brian
