Baja Bytes update September 25, 2024.
What a week! According to FISH DOPE (below), South Island near SKR is the best bet to score tuna within 75 miles of Point Loma, which Maras Sportfishing in Ensenada confirmed in their report. The Vagabundos Del Mar gang had a great trip with Tony Reyes at San Felipe. On the west coast, Garcia’s Pangas at San Quintin reported great fishing. Jumping back to the Sea of Cortez at BOLA, the locals were bragging about having “Yellow Fever.”
Baja Sur’s Rosie reported monster-sized yellowtail, along with a variety of additional catches at Cedros Sportfishing. And according to Shari Bondy, yellowfin have continued to bite at Bahía Asunción.
Jonathan at Tailhunter in Loreto posted that the wahoo have begun to bite. Farther below at East Cape, the “Wahoo Gold Cup and Tuna Shoot Out” Tournaments at Van Warmers were crowd pleasers, and below there, Gordo Banks and Pisces at Cabo had some monster tuna and more wahoo. ..If you fish Baja this week send me a photo and report.

Although we still see bluefin and yellowtail action below South Island, the best bet to score some tuna within 75 miles of Point Loma is here below South Island near SKR. Not to say it is slam dunk fishing. It’s hit or miss, like tuna fishing almost always is, but the fish are here and are not moving around much. The best odds are biting for the boats with the ability to throw lots of chum for long periods.
The bluefin are in the 20 to 35-pound range units, and there are yellows mixed in with some small 6 to 10-pound units and some 12 to 25-pounders.
The best signs are still below South Island from the Lighthouse to SKR.
The bluefin are popping up under birds, though there are sometimes just foamers without birds.
Bluefin are caught using live bait, small stick bait, poppers, and surface irons. For live bait, anglers have noticed that the fish are line shy, with a 20 to 30-pound test line working best, while the 40-pound test is not getting as many bites.
Bite times have been early, from sunrise to 9 a.m. and mid-afternoon until sunset. While some yellowtail remain around the Islands, their bite has been slower than a few weeks ago but has yet to end by any measure. Some days are better than others and there is a decent chance you’ll catch one. Fly-lined and slow-trolled sardine account for most of the yellowtail, but some are also caught on mint-colored surface iron.
The best yellowtail action has been around South Island, Ribbon Kelp, and SKR, with some also on the Middle Grounds.
Also interesting to note… several different boats have hooked marlin while fly-lining sardine for bluefin.
Sea lions have been a major nuisance lately, making it very difficult to slow-troll sardines. Calico bass fishing has been good on the Boiler Rocks near the Middle Grounds and the back side of South Island.…Fish Dope

Latest news and information about the Tony Reyes Fishing Tours:
Aug 4 – Aug 9 Fish Report … Hola Anglers, Tony returned from another successful trip chartered by the Vagabundos Del Mar Fishing Club. He reports they fished as far south as San Francisquito and then fished north, ending the last day at the Enchanted Islands. They landed some Grouper and lost plenty of Grouper at Refugio. There was a good variety of fish, and the cabrilla were good-sized. They had excellent weather throughout the trip! …Tony Reyes Fishing Report

Boat ramp bait catching to scrape up a few lively candidates!
Still, as far as the fish dope here at the Marina in Loreto, the fish-catching scene remains the same, with a yellowtail and a pinch of dorado.
Dorado may be thicker than we know out in the blue water. Few local boats like to go far and burn lots of gas. Tournaments are another story – the non-local fishermen see the blue water and want a trophy! The usual spots are where the yellowtail have been caught. Las Lagrimas and Punta Lobo are currently the most popular and productive. However, bait continues to be challenging to secure. The bait sellers only have enough mackerel for the first two or three boats. Cast netting around and outside the Marina only results in some Lisas and other odd types! .…Rick Hill

September 15th, 2024Most boats were taken out of the marina Tuesday and Wednesday as we experienced Tropical Storm Ileana on Thursday and Friday. Winds were not too bad averaging around 30 mph. We did get a lot of rain in our area, which was much needed. We took advantage of this off week to detail and do some maintenance on the boats as we prep for our busy October/November season.

The port was reopened Saturday morning. The boats that fished this weekend reported catching some small yellowfin tuna, dorado, and marlin (blue and striped). All of these species were caught offshore while trolling lures looking for surface activity. This upcoming week, we will most likely focus on San Luis, Iman, and Gordo as many boats reported seeing big schools of bait this weekend…Good Fishing, Brian B

The wave heights are in the 3 to 4-foot range, and the sea temperatures continue to hold in the low eighties, along with matching air temperatures.
