——— Baja Waters ———
The fishing was hot in Baja and Baja Sur in July, but anglers predict fishing will be even better in August. Ensenada and San Quintin reported excellent action deep dropping for yellowtail and other bottom fish. Bahia de Los Angeles reports the same action on the Sea of Cortez side.
Baja Sur seems to have many smaller dorado to pick through to find a genuine keeper at Loreto. Although not targeted by many, there seems to be enough striped marlin and sailfish to make fishing for billfish enjoyable.
At La Paz, Jonathan Roldan reported a few yellowtail in the 30-pound class mixed in with 20-pound or larger dorado, plus an occasional billfish, while in Las Arenas, they are getting the big mix of dorado, billfish, pargo, cabrilla, bonito, jack crevalle, roosterfish, etc.
At East Cape, everyone is preparing for the Bisbee East Cape Offshore beginning at the end of July. According to Jeff DeBrown, the billfish returned, and they had excellent marlin fishing. There is also good tuna fishing between 12 and 30 miles out with some big roosters on the beach.
Most dorado average 8 to 14 pounds, although we had a big bull that weighed over 40 pounds. According to Eric Brictson, the few wahoo caught were over 30 pounds.
At Cabo, striped marlin, a few small blues, some wahoo, and some good-sized yellowfin, but mostly smaller dorado are showing up.

The best zone for paddy fishing recently has been the area named above. The primary catch throughout this large zone is kelp paddy yellowtail with a slight shot at dorado, and the best signs continue to come from the lower end of the 31 block. The 10 to 25-pound range yellowtail have been biting on fly-lined sardine and surface iron on 25-pound test. The dorado are in the 4 to 15-pound class. If you find a paddy with dorado that are not biting, try chunking sardine and chumming to get them feeding.
As for tuna, there haven’t been many signs down this way lately. There are just a few small spots of yellowfin or bluefin that seem very boat-shy…Fish Dope
Lower 500/West of Colonet
There are signs of yellowfin here and to the south, but they are widely scattered and far from a sure thing.
The primary catch here remains kelp-paddy yellowtail or dorado IF you can find a kelp. Few are around right now, but most kelp hold at least a few yellows, and some are loaded. It depends…Fish Dope

Fishing here in BOLA in June has been outstanding, with many wide open days and lots of big yellowtail. The leopard grouper has been from very good to excellent. My friend Dennis Quesnel and Company are here fishing on a panga this season. The day before, they caught 84 fish, kept 12, and released the rest! To all you fishermen coming down and fishing for leopard grouper: PLEASE DON’T KEEP THEM ALL… RELEASE SOME BACK INTO THE WATER, ESPECIALLY THE BIG BREEDERS!!! …Captain Juan Cook

Lots of fun fishing around Lopez Mateos and Mag Bay this last week. Grouper, Pargo, Halibut are plentiful. The Yellowfin tuna are reaching 32+ lbs. They are full of calamari, pompano, mackerel and sardines. The water outside the boca is 74.5 degrees. There are only a few Dorado so far. And we are still using mainly cedar plugs. MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of June
18-25, 2024

This past week, the billfish returned, and we had some
excellent marlin fishing. There is also some good tuna fishing, anywhere
between 12 and 30 miles out. There were some big roosters on the beach and a
lot of spotting activity with them, although some were not very interested. We
saw big roosters as well down near the lighthouse. The fishing is fair, with a
few mixed in the marlin grounds but nothing consistent. There was more
consistency toward the north overall. The warmer water temperature was holding
a lot of bait….Jeff DeBrown

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
July 21, 2024
It was a hot and humid week in Los Cabos with low tourist activity. We expect to continue seeing light crowds of anglers throughout the rest of July and August.
Caballito and sardina remain the main bait source from the local marina. Frozen Ballyhoo has been the go-to bait, producing most of the marlin bites. This week’s primary target species was striped marlin, with marlin fishing grounds everywhere. There is a good chance of hooking into a marlin from 3 to 20 miles from our marina while looking for surface activity. The inner and outer Gordos are good sites, as plenty of bait is concentrated there. We had a few reports of small blue marlin (under 200 pounds) hooked in the surrounding areas of the Gordo’s. A group of divers reported seeing a black marlin well over 500 pounds at the inner Gordo.

The best chance at finding a wahoo or dorado has been within the same area while looking for marlin. Fast-trolling Ballyhoo has produced the most strikes, though we also see some hookups on lures and live caballito. Most dorado are averaging 8 to 14 pounds, though we did have a big bull weighing over 40 pounds in the mix. The few wahoo that were caught were all over 30 pounds.
We continue to hook a few nice snapper, amberjack, and grouper from the Vinorama, Imán, and La Fortuna rock piles. Fishing the bottom has been challenging in the last few weeks as we have had strong currents that do not allow us to fish it efficiently.
Closer to shore, we still catch some nice roosters, pompano, and jacks. A handful of big Spanish Mackerel (Sierra) were also caught throughout our shoreline. Most of these Sierra were between 8 and 12 pounds. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

Hello baja bytes I see you have a lot of information on baja. I have a question about the town of Bahia De Los angeles, is there any ATM or banks in the town or vicinity? I’ve never visited bola yet, but I been wanting to. I visit Los barriles, loreto and cabo San Lucas the most.
