There were “kelp paddy” yellowtail and dorado caught down here today, and there have been a hint of bluefin and yellowfin around. However, the kelp are few and far between, and not all are holding. That said, the few that are around are holding good numbers of 10 to 20-pound yellows – you just have to get lucky and find the right one.
It’s worth checking anything floating, as dorado often gather around any debris. Something as small as a Coke bottle will sometimes have dorado on it.
Watch for birds and take note of the direction they are flying. They might lead you to a “foamer” of tuna or a good kelp.
Likewise, check out dolphin, especially if they are tail-slapping or doing back flips. …Fish Dope

Not many fishermen have braved the ocean waters this past week, although the weather was only “medium” brutal! Dorado and bonito are hitting on the trolled “tuna-type” lures. The live bait situation is still not good, and the available mackerel fit in the “salami-sized” range. The hopeful bait seekers have been trolling Sabikis in front of the Marina Break Wall for an occasional big-eyed jack that is half the size of the salami mackerel. Cabrilla and mini roosterfish are biting trolled hard bait close to the rocks along the coast. GORDO BANKS PANGAS

We are now heading into our peak tropical storm season. Until now, we have had only a few storms pass just far enough off to the southwest that they have not significantly impacted Southern Baja, primarily bringing humidity and heat. We had light showers Saturday morning, quickly passing, and the rest of the week was mostly clear, with a few windy days in between. This has translated into light crowds of anglers as we continue to see slow activity throughout the Panga area.

This week, most fleets concentrated on the inner and outer Gordos as we saw more surface and bait activity. Many tournament boats also fished in this area, as a handful of boats spotted big marlin in the surrounding areas. A few of our boats focused part of the early morning on fishing the bottom at the inner Gordo. Anglers landed a handful of big dogtooth snappers while drifting strips of skipjack. A couple of these fish surpassed the 60-pound mark. Some Captains reported losing many more that got into the rock structures before they could stop them. Other boats reported similar snapper activity at Vinorama and Iman Bank. There is a good chance of picking some quality red snapper and amberjack with jigs at Iman Bank earlier in the morning.

If bottom action slowed on some days, the boats started trolling marlin lures and rigged Ballyhoo to target dorado and striped marlin. We are seeing more quality-sized dorado, though the numbers remain low. The striped marlin bite seems to have settled down compared to previous weeks. Many blue marlin were hooked throughout these areas, though most were under 200 pounds. A few boats reported wahoo strikes while looking for marlin and dorado. One local pangero landed a nice 50-pound wahoo on a marlin lure this weekend.

A few private boats continue to look for the schools of porpoise 35 to 50 miles offshore. Even though this activity has slowed down significantly, some of the boats were able to find the larger yellowfin. This week, most of the yellowfin were over 80 pounds.

It is now late in the season for roosterfish, though we are still seeing a few nice-sized ones throughout our shoreline. Some anglers also reported seeing schools of big Spanish mackerel (Sierra) later in the day with the live sardina.

As the fishing remains spotty on some days, we still see signs that fishing conditions should improve in the coming weeks….Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

Pisces Fleet Sportfishing’s 29th week featured Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Silky Shark, and Needlefish, spread over a variety of different locations from the 1150 Spot, 20 miles to the 130 Spot, the 95 Spot, and the  Herradura. They enjoyed remarkable weather featuring clear skies, calm seas with five to six-foot wave heights, and winds from 12 to 16 miles per hour. The water temperatures ranged from 70 to 80 degrees, with ambient temps from 75 to 81 degrees that only varied slightly throughout the week, from Friday through Thursday.

A sample of some of the action on Friday, July 12, included “ANDREA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, with Captain Raul and Mate Marcelo and anglers Adrian Burger, Louis Burger, and Wilkus Burger from Harriman, Utah. The anglers kept busy releasing Six Striped Marlin, with an estimated weight of 100 to 130 pounds, taken on fresh caballito at the 1150 Spot and a single dorado on a Ballyhoo.

Pisces Fleet Sportfishing Week 31 Report

Summer has settled in for our Pisces fleet. Everything seemed just a tad sluggish, with the fish moving around the many banks surrounding Baja’s tip. However, our team was up to the challenge, and the variety remained consistent, although the count dropped slightly.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Calm seas with some wind, 4 to 7 kts. in the afternoon.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79 to 80 F
BEST BAITS & LURES: Mackerel, Ballyhoo, Lisa, Cocinero, Cedar Plugs, Plumas, and various marlin lures.
