Ensenada

Fishing was tough today. Red tide was everywhere, and the wind blowing against the current made fishing exceptionally rough. But we still managed to get some quality rockfish and bass. Also, great news! There is live bait for sale in Ensenada. …It’s 4 Reels Sportfishing.

Cedros Island

Cedros Island report, mid July.

Fishing is happening big time. Many of our boats are getting yellowtail limits early by the morning, while at the same time calicos are hungry. Yellowtail is in the range of 15-30 lbs, but they sure give a fight, with many guests commenting how much more stronger are than those up north. Also sheepshead, sand bass, and others are on the menu. On the other hand, halibut has been slow, and no white seabass for us yet….or maybe we haven’t tried hard enough? Most effective to the bite has been surface mint and blue on white. But some are brought in with heavy. Haven’t heard about trolling rapalas being effective just yet. For calicos, many kinds and colors of plastics would work just fine.

Arriving to Cedros by 10 am and get to fish right away is called close to “instant gratification” Some were waiting to make this trip for a long time to target their favorite species and enjoy the sealife of this protected area.

Weather has been consistently on the nice side. Cool overcast mornings, sunny skies by noon and after, and a little more wind around the corner or away from the protection of the island. Day ramhe like 65-75F

We have a Last Minute Booking specials with up to $500 discount. Check the webpage for more details.

“Fishin for the Mission 2024” was swept by team El Guapo Chingada. Jeff Rocca has been fishing the tournament for several years, and he always seems to show up at the scales first, so he’s winning for a while until he watches a bigger fish come in! This year, his fish held up. On Friday, his team caught the biggest two Dorado for a total of 41.1 pounds, and on Saturday, they went out and caught two nice Yellowtail for a combined weight of 71.1 pounds. That means his fish won all THREE TOP SPOTS in the tournament! Congratulations guys! Good job!

It’s the usual summer fishing with a bit of rain to dust off the white rocks along the coastline. It might have been the second rainy spell of this year! Most anglers focused on dorado, though the usual fish species were available. Live bait continues to be an issue, judging by the sunrise scene in front of the harbor.  The first boats at the bait sellers’ boats are the only happy ones, while the remainder of the boats have to improvise or go without. I always recommend buying bait; the “get there early” option is subject to interpretation. “How early” pops up, and some groaning occurs when “before the sun breaks the horizon” is suggested. …Rick Hill

“On Tuesday, my boat partner and I decided to go rooster fishing, and we each caught three. However, two other people in two boats got into the dorado and caught seven or eight each in the 30 to 35-pound range. We heard someone caught a 40-pound dorado about 40 miles east of Loreto (10 miles farther out to sea than the place I reported a couple of days ago).

“Yesterday, we wanted to try our luck at that spot, but we encountered very rough seas, which is putting it mildly. The ocean was upside down, but I caught two small dorado, about 15 pounds each. We spotted and almost ran over a billfish and a nice marlin, but obviously, they weren’t in play. …Carl Blackledge

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
July 14th, 2024

Another hot, humid week in Southern Baja. We continue to see light crowds of anglers and slow activity in our marina. We had some cloud coverage with light showers this weekend, which helped cool off the areas throughout the day. For live bait, caballito and sardina remain the primary bait source from the local bait guys. We rely heavily on frozen Ballyhoo for our current marlin, wahoo, and dorado bites.

This week’s primary target species was striped marlin, and the best action was found 12 to 15 miles from our marina. Most of the bites came on rigged Ballyhoo, with a few on live caballito. We continue to hear of a few small blue marlin and sailfish hooked in the same areas. Many of the local boats are focusing on the surrounding areas of the inner and outer Gordos. Small skipjacks and bulito schools are concentrating in these areas.

Throughout the same areas, boats landed a few nice wahoo. Most of these wahoo were quality-sized, over 35 pounds. Many captains reported the wahoo coming up to the lures and bait (Ballyhoo) multiple times before getting a hook set. The larger wahoo were landed on rigged Ballyhoo and live caballito. The live caballito were released back into the water after the first couple of strikes. We are also seeing more quality-sized dorado in the 20 to 25-pound range, and we are catching these dorado in the same area we find the marlin.

Bottom fishing was tough this week due to the heavy currents, though we did see some nice-sized yellow snapper, red snapper, grouper, and amberjack. Bottom action seems to decrease as we enter our peak summer season.

Porpoise and yellowfin schools continue to be spotted anywhere from 30 to 50 miles out. Many local pangeros are putting in long days to chase after these tuna. We are still seeing a few jacks and roosters closer to shore, though it seems the rooster bite will be ending soon….Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

The Pisces Fleets week began with calm seas and clear skies in the morning. However, the winds created some 5 to 6-foot waves in the afternoon. The conditions remained similar throughout the week, with sea temps in the ideal range of 79 to 81 degrees. By the end of the week, the species list had grown to include Needlefish, Bonito, Skipjack, Jack Crevalle, Roosterfish, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Hammerhead Shark, Wahoo, Silky Shark, Sailfish, Striped Marlin, and Blue Marlin.

Bill Hornocker and Guy Howard Evans, from California, fished aboard the “Anamar II,” a 24-foot Panga, with Captain Cesar, where they managed to catch and Release ONE Feisty Hammerhead Shark with a mouthful of teeth on a Lisa near Rancho San Lucas.

Andrea with a nice days catch.

Captain Fernando Noyola and Mate Miguel on the “ANDREA,” a28-foot Uniflite, took anglers John Russell and Noah Russell from Austin, Texas, to visit the good old 1150 Spot, which once again delivered a super fishing day filled with action. At the end of the day, the two anglers had caught and Released SEVEN Striped Marlin, estimated to weigh 80 to 120 pounds, that had bit both dead Ballyhoo and caballito.

They also had a bonus catch for the day of One Chunky 40-Pound Wahoo

Not far from the “ANDREA” on the 1150 Spot was the “RUTHLESS,” a31-foot Bertram with Captain Beto Lira and Mate Jesus R. Their anglers Elizabeth Broome, Emma Gillemtine, Gunner Gillemtine, Jaqueline Bromme, and Slade Gillemtine from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, not only caught and Released FIVE Great-Sized Striped Marlin, but they also had a bonus catch for the day of One Chunky 40-Pound Wahoo to take back for dinner that evening.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Calm seas with some wind, 4-7 kts. In the afternoon.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79-80 F
BEST BAITS & LURES: Mackerel, Ballyhoo, Lisa and Cocinero, Cedar Plugs, Plumas, and various marlin lures.
