There was a recent yellowtail bite at South Island, just south of the SKR.
This morning, there were some 5-pound yellows caught at the Lighthouse at South Island, plus some bigger calico and nice-sized barracuda, but it was dead everywhere else.
The yellows have mostly been caught in the mornings from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on flylined sardines, surface irons, and deep-diving Rapalas.
They were found under birds and meter marks, with excellent morning surface signs.
The size of the yellows is jumbled, running from as small as 6 to 10 pounds up to real sluggers in the 30 to 40-pound class, with the majority running 15 to 20 pounds.
There are also good numbers of barracuda spread throughout the islands. They are on most South Island spots, and the Ribbon Kelp is loaded with them. Sunday, there were some bluefin found just south of South Island. However, no word of bluefin has been seen here today. …Fish Dope.
**** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Drive slow and beware!!! About 3 to 5 miles North of Gonzaga is a nasty hole smack in the middle of the road. Hopefully, it has been repaired. However, as you drive, if you see someone pulled over fixing a flat tire, be super diligent and slow down! You don’t want to suffer the same fate! …Keith Chandler

Cedros Outdoor Adventures’ first fishing group report!
Thats right, our first group of the season arrived yesterday (5 day, July 8-12) Right after settle at the lodge and get their gear ready, they went out fishing, and they caught a few decent fish to warm up, including yellowtail and one halibut. But today, the first full day, some of our boats brought to the dock yellowtail limits of decent 20-30 lbs right before noon. Today’s total count for 5 boats with 2 anglers each was about 35 yellowtail. So, in general, this first full day (tuesday) is the beginning of a great season to which we’ll like to invite you to join in July or August. As for weather, it was just overcast, cool breeze in the morning, but the sun will keep you warm. A little bit stronger wind around the corner at the banks of the south of the island, but nothing that wearing a sweatshirt can’t handle. Actually, some guests were happy about this weather.
Tomorrow, and the two days after, some more full days of fishing, and even the last day before departure.
Check our website to join us for a great fishing experience: www.cedrosoutdooradventures.com call us 619.793.5419 or email with questions reservations@cedrosoutdooradventures.com

Incredible Surface fishing!!! We went a little off the mark using this rod for casting. We abused it a little, but the quality of our Pro Chem could take it! …Chema

After the first summer rain, we went out on a muggy morning to a high spot that we rarely fish, referred to as “snapper hole!” It is a spot that typically doesn’t have much quantity, but you can get a better variety of species. There was a ton of bait moving on the fish finder. We caught hundreds of Fortune Jacks, referred to as Madrigal in Mexico. They resemble a Yellowtail but with a pinkish color and darker meat. They have power like other members of the Jack Family and are fun to catch. We also caught Yellowtail and a Pacific Almaco Jack. The highlight of the day was my friend hooking into a small marlin while jigging a 200g MILF Knife Jig. The marlin came to the surface, jumping and thrashing. We then noticed about a 150 to 200-pound Mako Shark chasing him. The marlin broke off in the propeller when I went for my phone. The next fish caught was a Bonito, which the shark inhaled along with the jig as soon as it hit the surface. We trolled new MILF Trolling lures on the way home, hooking multiple Bonito. Then, we called it a day in the Summer Heat! …Nathan Burbey

My longtime understanding of the Loreto fishery held that the yellowtail fishing opportunity happened only in the spring. I always wondered if they ever left. This theory has been thrown under the boat. Yellowtail, roosterfish, and “amberjack” can be caught along the coast north of Coronado once you tire of working the current lines for dorado. There are a bunch of jacks in the fish count, along with dorado in the lovely month of July. (July in Loreto is lovely, even if the weather borders on lethal!) Dorado, weighing 5 to 30 pounds, have been hitting live bait with the most consistent action slightly offshore near San Bruno. Good Variety, Very Humid!
We are now in the heat of the summer and starting to feel the high humidity. Distant tropical storms and hurricanes have increased the area’s humidity and heat index. There are light crowds of anglers now, yet there are quite a few families at local resorts as they celebrate the 4th of July in Los Cabos. We experienced slight ocean swells and a few windy days this week. Most of the week, the North wind started picking up around midday and transitioned into a South wind later in the afternoon, which gave us a nice breeze throughout the hot days.
Overall, fishing action was decent on most days. Live bait supplies consisted mainly of caballito, mullet, live sardina, and some moonfish. Many boats took frozen Ballyhoo as bait, which came in handy for targeting striped marlin, dorado, and wahoo.

We saw some nice bottom action, though it was difficult on some days due to the high currents. The best bottom action came from San Luis and Vinorama Banks, where some boats landed quality amberjack, grouper, and a variety of snapper (red, yellow, barred, and dogtooth). The bigger sizes were landed on live bait, mostly caballito and mullet. Most red snapper and amberjack were hooked on jigs earlier in the morning while a few other boats fished the inner Gordo’s rock structure. Though many sharks are still in the area, a few quality fish, such as yellowtail, amberjack, and grouper, were landed while drifting live bait on the bottom.
A few wahoo were landed at Vinorama while fast trolling rigged Ballyhoo. On Thursday, one of the private boats landed two wahoo, one weighing 89.6 pounds and the other around 40 pounds. Other boats reported losing a few strikes that same day. Besides that, we did not hear of any more wahoo throughout the week.
Heading farther offshore, anywhere from 5 to 20 miles out, some of the bigger boats reported hooking into a few small blue marlin, with most under 200 pounds. Anglers found fair chances at hooking into striped marlin and dorado. Some scattered dorado were on these same grounds, with most small juveniles under 8 pounds, though we did see some nicer ones nearing 18 pounds.
On most days, some local pangeros target yellowfin tuna while looking for porpoise, anywhere from 30 to 45 miles out; however, it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Some pangas landed double-digit yellowfin tuna, with most fish averaging 20 to 40 pounds. We did hear of a 200-pounder caught on Friday in the same porpoise schools.
We are still catching quality-sized roosterfish and big jack crevalle closer to shore…Good Fishing, Brian. Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

This is the beautiful Rooster that hit the lure in the last scene of the last drone video I posted! This guy swam off super strong and hopefully we can catch him again tomorrow!..Cabosurfcaster
