Coronado Islands/Rockpile

Streaky red tide continues to be the top story here. If you can find some clean water you have a shot at scoring a nice 15-25lb yellowtail. Guys slow trolling sardines or mackerel seem to have the best odds right now.
No single area stands out rather just look for clean water. There are some yellows in it. Not a lot, but there are enough to make it worth trying.
Rockfish action is good at the Rockpile. If you have live mackerel there is pretty good odds of a nice lingcod too.

Report from David Jones;
Fished the south island at Coronados Saturday ran rapalas. Yt were on the clean and dirty water break but we got hooked up right at the clean water. We got some good grades early, doubled up 25-28lbs fish. Ran rapalas remainder until boats came in on us and spoiled our trolling. Caught 9 yt by 7:30 a.m. we were back at dock at 2 pm. Couldn’t not of had a better day of fishing. This was for sure the biggest YT I’ve ever seen at the islands. Water was 64-65 north island was void along with the middle grounds and a bunch of dirty water. Seen guys landing on slow troll sardines but the grade seemed to be smaller.

                   **** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Fish catching continues to be good with the bait situation edging towards “mas o meno’s”. Mackerel and sardina availability is a problem for the boats hitting the water later in the morning. It’s not clear whether we need to drag out the “full moon” excuse.  The sardina crop is usually just starting to pop around this time…Rick Hill

Along the beach as well as the boat we have been having some very good fly fishing action. We have been seeing very good numbers of fish daily. The fish have been of all sizes and include Rooster fish as well as jacks, pompano, lady fish as well as a few snapper.

Overall fishing is currently very good in the East Cape. We will be on the water daily this up coming week and will report how we do. Until then we wish everyone great fishing…Jeff DeBrown

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

June 23rd, 2024

Summer season has officially begun, and we are starting to see more vacationing families arrive in Los Cabos. This week, we experienced cooler temperatures with mornings in the low 70s and low 80s throughout the day. We also had some rain on Friday and scattered clouds throughout the weekend. A few windy days, predominantly from the South.

The main highlight this week was the Roosterfish bite along our shorelines. Some nicer fish were caught this week, a few in the 50–60-pound range. The bigger Roosters seem to be coming from in between La Laguna and Zacaton grounds. We are using live mullet, caballito, and sardines. A few boats reported picking up a couple on poppers earlier in the mornings after throwing handfuls of live sardines. While trolling live baits, a few boats hooked into some nice groupers and snappers. A handful of Sierra were landed on the live sardines as well.

Bottom actions was good for the first half of the week. Most of the boats focused on the grounds from San Luis to Cardon, with San Luis being the most productive for bigger amberjack and grouper. The biggest amberjack caught this week was 92 pounds, landed on a live caballito on the bottom. We also had a handful of grouper over 40 pounds, hooked on live caballito and mullet. Some smaller amberjack and a few bonita were landed on the jigs. Cardon is still producing good numbers of yellow snapper and pompano with live and dead sardines. Palmilla is also producing good numbers of smaller snapper, grouper, and pompano.

We only saw a couple dorado this week. These were caught while looking for marlin offshore on rigged ballyhoo. The striped marlin bite continues to be spotty, though there is a good chance of landing a couple if you put in the time. Many boats targeting marlin, are concentrating on the surrounding areas of both Gordos as there is good bait concentration there. Most of the marlin bites were reported 12-16 miles out while looking for warmer, blue water. The preferred bait was ballyhoo and live caballitos. A handful were landed on lures.…Good Fishing, Brian. Cabo San Lucas

25th Week of 2024 Overall Catch Success Rate, All Species Combined 81.43%
Catch Success Rate, Billfish, 58.57%, Dorado 5.71% Tuna 17.14% Other Species 21.43%

Week 25 began with a species-filled day for the Pisces Fleet, which included Blue and Striped Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado, Bonito, and Ladyfish. The boats found these fish on various banks and locations around Baja’s tip. This Friday and this weekend, the number of boats fishing and the number of fish caught plunged to the lowest since the First of January of 2024, although the few boats fishing did have some notable catches.

Captain Pepe and Mates Daniel, Ulises, and Fernando took the fishing group, Artie Davenport, Brandon Linder, Cody Baker, Jim Biden, Kyle Denton, Marc Blanton, and Mark Padgett, all from Atlanta, Georgia, on the “CHASIN TAIL,” a 62-foot Viking, out to last month’s hot spot, the 1150 Bank, where they hit the jackpot releasing Three Striped Marlin in the 100 to 150-pound class hooked on Ballyhoo and Lures, along with Two Dorado, and a 35-pound Wahoo on a  Rapala outside of the 1150 Bank.

The “REBECCA,” 31-foot Bertram named after the Ehrenberg’s daughter, with Captain Jose Ramon and Mates Alucano and Jose G, with anglers Jeffrey Ernest, Mark Jensen, Jose Ramon, Vincent Purcell, and William Cowles went the distance, 33 miles, to the 120 Spot where they caught and released another one of the early season blue marlin on a Petrolero lure.

Aboard the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram, Captain Rosendo Gomez and Mate Jorge V, the Emily Spangler, Eva Spangler, Patricia Spangler, Shelby Spangler, and Steve Spangler all enjoyed an exciting fishing day on the 110 Spot, 30 miles from the Marina. Their catch included One Striped Marlin on a live caballito that was safely released, along with a 35-pound Wahoo, also on caught bait.

Angler Gregory Roe from Arizona released a Striped Marlin while fishing with Captain Rafa on the2oot panga, Anamar II. He hooked the fish on a bait near the La Casita Blanca,

Over the weekend, the number of boats fishing dropped to a handful, including the “TEJAS,” a 42-foot Yellowfin with Captain Frank Montelongo and mate Alan Silva who ran 35 miles outside, 150 degrees, where they caught and released One Striper on a lure, plus a good-sized Wahoo also on a lure, with Mary and Sean O’Brien, from California. Captain Francisco (Frank) Arturo Montelongo began fishing with his father at age seven. He moved to Cabo from Guerrero Negro at age 12, and he has been in love with sportfishing ever since – having it become part of his life, not just a profession. Captain Frank is a great Captain, outgoing and fun.

The “SEA SENORA,” a 42-foot Post Sportfisher with Captain Carmelo Navarrete, Mate Saamir Omar, and Angler Todd Ostron from California, caught and released Three Striped Marlin on caballito at Faro Viejo.

Starting the week off right, Captain Alan, Mates Yiki and Mel, and angler Timothy from Idaho – ran 63 miles on a 60-degree heading on information shared by another Captainon the “REELS N DIRT,” a tricked-out72-foot Viking Skybridge.

They were rewarded for their efforts with One released Blue Marlin and 20 Yellowfin Tuna weighing 20 to 162 pounds, which they caught on flying fish and cedar lures.
