On Friday, November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Saturday, November 23, 1963, was the official opening day for the new Imperial Beach Pier, with planned ceremonies and festivities, and it was hard to be festive when the nation was mourning and emotions were raw. The following weekend was a haunting melodrama, still vivid to those alive more than thirty-five years later.
Nevertheless, the pier opened, and people quickly began to catch fish. Within two weeks, anglers had landed a 20-pound halibut, a five-pound bonito, four 3/4-pound sculpin (scorpionfish), and a six-foot-long leopard shark. “Build it, and they will come” – that saying could apply to the Imperial Beach Pier. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on one’s viewpoint, the success of a few fishermen resulted in unbelievable crowds during those first few weeks. As many as 3,000 anglers lined the rails, shoulder to shoulder. A tram operation scheduled for the pier changed its plans because of the crowding

The yellow bite has been excellent at the Middle Grounds.
They have been throughout the Islands. Recently, the lee of South Island has been producing many yellows here as well. Some fish have also been coming from the North Island at Pukey Point.
The fish are coming on surface irons, flylined sardine, and slow-trolled mackerel.
There has also been good bottom fishing around the islands for rockfish, whitefish, and sheepshead.

You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

The fishing continues to heat up offshore, where you can expect to find dorado (mahi mahi), barracuda, yellowtail, and tuna (deep); closer to shore, there are corbina, perch, seabass, and calico bass. …Fish Broker

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for the Week of MAY 6-14, 2024

Hola Amigos!
This week in the East Cape, we saw the fishing start to take off! We had a steady dorado bite for a while, and then we saw a large school of pompano come in. This week, we had a large school of striped marlin come up from the south, and the fleet was on it! Most cruisers had multiple strikes daily, with some landing up to five and six marlin per day. In addition to the excellent marlin bite, we had dorado, wahoo, sierra, roosters, snapper, and even yellowfin tuna. The tuna bite was about 55 miles out but seemed to move closer each day. On Saturday, we saw a 114-pound tuna come in on the cruiser “Marlintini,” along with a few others in the 50 to 120-pound range. The air temperature increased this week, with highs in the low-90s and overnight lows in the mid-70s. The water temperatures have also increased slightly, with surface temperatures reaching 78 degrees. …Anibal Miranda

May 19th, 2024

The yellowfin tuna bite picked up again! Compared to the beginning of the month, our marina’s foot traffic has increased significantly, and we now have a full schedule for the remainder of the month. These big tuna attract many locals and tourists as the word spreads fast. We are now starting to feel great heat throughout the days as temperatures in the low 90s creep in.
The tuna bite was consistent throughout most of the week. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were the best days as we saw many fish in the 100 to 150-pound club. The largest tuna caught this week was just shy of 200 pounds. This fish was hooked on 50-pound test, taking the team almost three hours to land. Most tuna action comes from live and dead sardina at Iman and San Luis Banks. However, a few anglers hooked them on squid strips.
Many of our captains reported seeing more wahoo activity. One of the boats within the fleet had five strikes first thing in the morning on Wednesday at Iman Bank while trolling Rapalas. They only managed to land one. Some other boats reported a few hookups at Vinorama.
We continue to see various bottom fish from different rock structures at Cardon. Using primarily sardina, we have caught yellow snapper, grouper, amberjack, sierra, and African pompano. A few grouper and amberjack were landed on jigs as well. We caught a handful of dorado this week while fishing inshore for roosterfish. Small schools of dorado have been spotted closer to shore, most averaging around 10 to 12 pounds.
Boats are spotting bigger roosterfish and more mullet throughout our shorelines. Most of the roosters are averaging 15 to 20 pounds, though we have seen a few that are 30 to 40 pounds. …Good Fishing, Brian
