My favorite place in San Diego is incredible – and great for fighting fish. If you go in the summer, it’s one of the best spots in the world! The bait to bring is squid on a sabiki rig. …link

Fishing at the islands has been slower over the last few days. The fish are still around. They are just not biting as well as they did last week.
Lately, the best fishing has been around the Middle Grounds, but there are fish all around the Islands. Fly line sardine or mackerel, sinker rig sardine, mint-colored surface iron, and Yoyo iron account for most yellows here. Watch for tern birds. They often hover right over the yellows as they move around. Still, there are plenty of yellowtail in the Lee of South Island, too. Some are tight to the Island in 30 to 45 feet of water. Some are caught at Pukey Point, but we mostly hear that the larger numbers are taken at the Middle Grounds and the Lee of South Island. That said, Pukey Point and the weather side of North Island might be a good choice if the other areas are loaded with boats.”…Fish Dope
Report from Jack:“We got to the Islands Sunday morning. There were very few signs around South Island. Boats were everywhere in the Middle Grounds. We stuck to Pukey Point and got one yellowtail on a fly line, then a second one trolling a Nomad madscad 100+ yards behind the boat. Too many boats and guys were crossing over us at the Middle Grounds this weekend. I hope this helps.”…Fish Dope
Evening update – Report from Chris: “Monday, 5/27 – We fished the Coronados, starting at 8:00. Nothing at the Middle Grounds, South Lee side, or the lighthouse. Very quiet. There were no birds seen working all morning!
The Grande was searching for middle grounds, around north Island, or at the lighthouse for nothing, then headed south towards the Rockpile, but we did not follow. We got limits of nice rockfish off Pukey, good reds, two legal lingcod, and bocaccio. We salvaged a slow day, and I had fun with my son!”…Fish Dope
**** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Good fishing, big Snapper Cubera
San Quintin
A few friends and I headed south of the Border in early May to a little-known fishing village. San Quintin offers classic southern California Island fishing. However, being much less pressured, the fishing is much better. The waters just outside San Quintin Bay offer a variety of fisheries – calico bass at the Island kelp beds, deep water yellowtail, and rockfish, plus shallow water bass on the flats and surface yellowtail, are all available depending on the time of year. They can all be had for a short panga ride and attempted on a single-day trip. …Alfredo Gutierrez

We are starting to see more visiting families as some schools are now off for summer break. Many visiting families take advantage of the nice weather in May/June as the upcoming months tend to be extremely hot and humid.
The main target this week was wahoo. We had a decent wahoo bite throughout the week. Surprisingly, most of the wahoo caught were later in the day as only a few were picked up first thing in the morning. According to multiple reports, most of the bites came after 10 am. A few lucky anglers were able to land 3 in one day, while losing a few more strikes. Most of these wahoo were averaging 20-35 pounds, though we did have a handful in the 40-pound club. Most of the action came from fast trolling rigged ballyhoo. A few wahoo were also landed on the XRaps and Nomad DTXs. The best areas for wahoo this week were the grounds from La Fortuna to Cardon, with most caught at our 25 spot. The biggest wahoo caught this week was a 76-pounder caught at the Outer Gordo while looking for marlin with rigged ballyhoo.
The yellowfin tuna bite is now extremely slow, lucky if you get one bite all day long. We only saw a handful of tuna this week; these were quality fish as most of them were averaging 60-80 pounds. It has been hard to efficiently target these yellowfin as the needlefish are a nuisance on most days. The few tuna that we saw were caught on live and dead sardines.
We currently have a good striped marlin bite going on, 15-20 miles out from our marina. Many boats have been spotting marlin schools throughout both Gordos. There is a good chance of landing a few nice fish on different lures and ballyhoo.
Closer to shore and rock structure, we continue to catch good numbers of yellow snapper, amberjack, and grouper. A few reports indicate that Palmilla Point has been producing the best action. Cardon is also one of the favorites spots.
Along our shoreline, we are starting to see some nice Roosterfish on live sardines and mullet. The best action came from La Laguna as one of our boats caught and released 9 throughout the morning, while losing a few more. They also landed some small dorado and big Jacks….Good Fishing, Brian

Pisces Report – 21st Week of 2024 Overall Catch Success Rate, All Species Combined 95%
Catch Success Rate, Billfish, 75.00%, Dorado13.33% Tuna 6.67% Other Species 53.33%
Week 21 began with 5 to 6-foot waves driven by 8 to 10 kts. of wind. Both the sea and air temps were in the mid-60s to high-70s, which seemed to offer perfect conditions for a variety of species, including wahoo, dorado, roosterfish, jack crevalle, yellowtail, silky shark, and striped marlin (that were all released).

The “MY WAY,” a 45-foot Viking with Captain Arturo and Mates Daniel and Josue aboard, delivered a remarkable day for the Bryston Sherman, Chase Watson, Tristan Zwerneman, and Turner Mehaffey group. Not only did they catch and release six Striped Marlin on the 1150 Bank, but they also caught Dorado, Roosterfish, and Yellowtail on Ballyhoo or caballito. When the fishing slowed, they headed for the Solmar\Pedregal area, and there they used Lisa, (mullet) as bait to produce several Yellowtails.
Kirk Kolb, Michael Balaban, Michael Laytos, Mitchell Ellman, and Patrick Mostyn fishing aboard the “YAHOO,” a beautifully maintained, 42-foot Bertram with Captain Ricardo Escamilla and Mate Yahoo Jose Escamilla-Yahoo had an exciting day on the water catching and releasing five Striped Marlin in the 80 to 100-pound class using Ballyhoo at the 1150 Spot that also produced two Silky Shark weighing around 100 to 120 pounds.
Adding more variety to the day’s catch with a much sought-after toothy, 35-pound Wahoo with live caballito. By the time they finally headed back to the Marina, they had also caught several Jack Crevalle weighing up to 15 pounds on small baitfish.
