Strong winds and heavy rains hit Baja
While the Atmospheric River has dominated the news lately, it has mostly been about its impact on California. However, Tijuana was hit pretty hard by the rains as the photo from Mexican Daily News confirms. According to recent reports or lack thereof, the rain seems to have reached as far as Bahia de Los Angeles, so, for the first time in Bajabyte history, we will only be featuring Baja Sur’s locations.

Whale Watching

February 5
The tide was racing out, so whales enjoyed spy hopping all around us but had a challenge approaching us. Five whales managed to get some loving. We enjoyed watching a courtship ballet and some moms and babies snuggling. …Shari Bondy was with Samuel Barrios at Whale Magic Tours.

Fishing inside Mag Bay is still great and the fish are getting bigger with all the good shrimp they are eating. . . Corvina, Pargo, Grouper and Trigger. Did get outside one day last week and ran into some nice yellowfin tuna fishing. Sashimi and smoked tuna!!!
Inside and outside there are fun whale antics to watch also . . . And we lived through 3 days of music and frolics of the Grey Whale Festival and are back to the slow quiet normal of Lopez Mateos.…Cheri King – Lopez Mateos Sportfishing.

February 4, 2024

There appeared to be more tourists arriving this week in the Los Cabos area. Even with the few colder mornings and windy afternoons, we were booked most of the week. We had a hot bite with some great variety overall, and we have continued to have a hot tuna and dorado bite at Iman and La Fortuna. These fish are nice-sized, with most tuna averaging 25 to 30 pounds and dorado over 12 to 15 pounds. We occasionally see a 60+ pound tuna and a 30+ pound dorado in the same mix. Most of this action has been on live sardina. Surprisingly, the sardina supply has remained consistent throughout the last few months. This has increased our chances of getting the big schools of dorado and the big schools of tuna excited. Tuna seemed to bite better either early mornings or closer to noon.
We saw good numbers of wahoo caught this week, with some nice fish in the 30 to 40-pound range. The fleet has seen these wahoo feeding off sardina within the same dorado and tuna schools. That said, most of the wahoo were caught with live sardina. Some boats were lucky enough to take a couple with circle hooks, and many others lost most of the strikes immediately. Some boats hooked some wahoo earlier in the morning while trolling Rapalas and rigged Ballyhoo.
The bottom action was decent, as we saw many species. Again, sardina has been the “go-to” bait. While drifting for tuna, the fleet has been dropping a few sardina to the bottom. We have seen some nice grouper, a variety of snapper, and a couple of amberjack. The bottom highlight this week was a 50-pound grouper. While drifting for tuna, we are also catching a few sierra and bonito, some on the bigger side. The biggest sierra this week was 9.7 pounds.
Throughout the weekend, we started seeing more signs of striped marlin from 4 to 5 miles from our Marina. Some boats got a few mackerel, the favorite bait option for the marlin. Other boats trolled lures, cocinero, and Ballyhoo and have been successful.
Whale action has been unreal, as we have seen them daily from our fillet station. These whales are putting on a big show for our clients. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson
Cabo San Lucas

Looking in our rearview mirror for the moment, 2024 began with clear skies, calm seas, and sea temps in the low 70s. It delivered memorable, exciting fishing experiences in many locations and provided multi-digit striped marlin releases for some of the fleet. At the same time, other fleet members focused on the phenomenal dorado, or the incredible yellowfin tuna bite, underscored in this report.
Remarkably, the weather mainly brought light breezes and calm seas that held for nearly the entire month until the last few days, when the wind strengthened to 8 to 10 knots, followed by 5 to 6-foot waves. Since then, the wind has settled down, and we are looking forward to an exciting February with plenty of fishing action.

This is one of the most unique fish I’ve ever had the privilege of landing! GOLDEN LEOPARD GROUPER A normal phase Leopard Grouper is like the one in the second picture. All are born the same color and when they get around 10” long the “lucky ones” (less than 1%) transition into this “xanthic” phase and become solid golden-orange color! The chances of catching a golden one from shore, and on a lure are super rare! Having it in my hands, it felt like I was holding some mythical creature..
I got him back in the water for a quick release and felt so lucky to have had the experience! This might be a once in a lifetime for me...Cabosurfcaster
