The following report focuses on many fishing updates, photos, and news from various locations up and down the East and West Coasts of the entire Baja Peninsula. It provides valuable information for fishing enthusiasts, contributed by local and visiting fishermen.

If you and your friends have fished somewhere in Baja and would like to share the results of your trips, our staff and followers would appreciate your info and tips, and we would be honored to include your observations, the locations, and the fishing conditions your groups encountered. So, let’s get started.

Imperial Beach

There is lots of life around here. There is anchovy, sardine, birds, dolphins, and whales. There is some mackerel showing on the bait but no gamefish that we have heard about recently.
That said yellowtail lives in this area year-round so it is possible some will show on it too.
Better bass fishing is happening down in Imperial Beach at the Pipe. It is mostly sand bass with a sample of calico bass and some sculpin.
Guys fishing the knocker rig with a whole fresh frozen squid are the ones doing best. Be sure and work the bait SLOWLY right in the structure…Fish Dope

NE of Coronados/Lower 9 Mile Bank/Upper Finger Bank

There is good rockfish action down here, its the only “local” option. The area to the NE of North Island is giving up a nice mix of red rockfish and pretty much all-you-want whitefish.
The Lower 9 is seeing good rockfish action along with a fair number of lings in 450-700 feet of water.

Coronado Islands/Rockpile

Other than rockfish, whitefish, sheephead and lingcod there is very little happening around the Islands. No yellowtail seen or caught here in well over a month now. There was some big bonito around 2-3 weeks ago but those are gone too. Only game in town is the above mentioned rockfish/whitefish/sheephead/lingcod deal happening at the Rockpile.

                   **** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Ensenada

Days catch of bonita out of Ensenada.

There has been good bonito fishing down here from Todo Santos to Punta Banda and down the Mexican coast. Local panga are draging rapalas and feathers to locate them and them following up with colt snipers, kroc-o-diles, surface iron or just about anything shiny for additional fish. Bonito running from 4 to over 10lbs.

Down at Santo Tomas, south of Punta Banda, there are lots of big reds and other mixed red rockfish. No sign of the barracuda since last weekend.

San Quintin

BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES YELLOWTAIL ACTION ON THE YO-YO DW-1!!!!

Received a messaged from @datomatic that he and his buddies cruised to Bay of LA in the Sea of Cortez to try their luck at some YT.  It didn’t disappoint! He was fishing with @fg.sportfishing for 3 days during this past MLK weekend.  He was fishing a scrambled egg @danwade6288 DW-1 yo-yo.  That’s all he needed to load up the coolers.  He and his crew got limits of YT and limits for the Capt.  No doubt, Bay of LA is one of those magical places to catch bruiser YT! Congrats gents!!

Guerrero Negro

Excellent fishing, beautiful specimens we were able to capture a few days ago…Chema Medina

The first whale-watching mother and calf pair we watched this season was exciting! The calf had its mouth open most of the time, which we considered very strange. The mother slept the entire time that we observed the two of them. The calf we named “Barbie” swam circles around her mom and rested on her nose and back.

Upon editing my photos, I discovered the calf was opening its mouth because there were whale lice all around its lips. The gums were a strange reddish color, which may have been lice as well that caused discomfort.

Another highlight of our day was when a male breached very close to our panga eight times! We saw a couple dozen whales, several cow/calf pairs, some males, and a gigantic sleeping pregnant female. What an incredible first trip out on Laguna Ojo de Liebre!!!

La Paz

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for Week of Jan. 2-9, 2024
East Cape

Here in the East Cape we continue to see pretty good fishing for both Marlin and Dorado on the outside and on the inside we have lots of small baitfish that are getting chased by small roosters needle, fish, and a few Sierra. Looking at the forecast this week we’re going to get a little wind here in the East Cape but a few days we’re going to be able to get out as well so hopefully the fishing remains the same…Jeff DeBrown Reel Baja

San Jose del Cabo
A young lady with her days catch of large early season wahoo.

January 28th, 2024

Even though we did not have a big number of boats go out this week, the fishing continues to be consistent and productive. Crowds of tourists arriving continue to enjoy the great weather now prevailing in the Los Cabos area. Locally, we are starting to feel the first signs of springtime, not quite as cool early in the mornings and scattered cloud cover throughout the day with average highs of about 80 degrees. We did have a few windy days this week with a mix of north and south air currents. Nonetheless, we were able to fish our go to spots.

Most of the fishing this week was concentrated at the Iman Bank. Due to great supplies of sardines, the fleet was able to be very productive as we saw a better mix of species. The main target continues to be yellowfin tuna. The tuna bite was consistent throughout the whole week, though we did see better action later in the day. Many of the local guys fished in the afternoons and were able to catch their limit within a few hours. We are using live sardines with 40# fluoro. We do not recommend going any lower than that as we saw bigger fish this week. The average tuna at Iman is around 20-40 pounds, though we did see a few ones over 70. The biggest one caught by the fleet this week was an 85 pounder. Tough fight with 30# line and 40# fluoro.

Within the same area, we continue to catch great numbers of dorado. As experienced throughout the last few months, these dorado continue to be nice sized, with many overpassing the 20-pound mark.

We did see more bottom action this week. Most of the boats that focused on the bottom, were able to catch good numbers of groupers, snappers, and amberjack while using live sardines and strips of skipjacks.

An extrordiary large grouper cauigth on the Gordo Banks.

The most unexpected catch this week was a 120–130-pound grouper. We were not able to weight this fish but many of the local fishermen estimated between 55-60 kilos. This fish was hooked on a strip of skipjack while looking for tuna. The fight was a bit unusual; according to the captain, they thought it was a nice size tuna throughout most of the fight.

The marlin bite did slow down a bit, but they are definitely still out there. Many of the boats that specifically targeted marlin, were able to hook on average 3-5 fish a day, with some days being better than others.

Whale action has been incredible. We have been able to see them almost daily from our fillet station…Good Fishing, Brian

Cabo San Lucas
