Baja’s West Coast showcases “Bocana Adventure”

Baja Bytes update September 18, 2024.

Baja’s first storm of the year, Tropical Storm Ileana, arrived in Cabo, causing the port to be closed on Friday and Saturday with winds to 40 kts and rain traveling up to Loreto before moving over to the Mexican coast.

The Fleet in Cabo resumed fishing on Sunday and seemed to pick up where it left off for billfish, yellowfin tuna, and a few wahoo and dorado. Ensenada, San Quintin, and Bahia de Los Angeles all enjoyed improved fishing for both bottom and surface fish.
In La Bocana, the tournament, “Bocana Adventure”, featuring the Children’s IGFA PASSPORT fishing clinic on Friday, Kayak and Shore fishing on Saturday, followed by Offshore fishing on Sunday, attracted nearly sixty local and visiting anglers.

San Quintin

I want to thank my friends at Garcias Pangas Sportfishing, San Quintin, and The Old Mill in San Quintin for helping make my incredible trip happen. There were some great memories for my friends and myself. Hands down, this is my favorite fishing spot in Baja! Here is a shout-out to my Compa Eddie, Gordo, and Bear, the hardest-working Captains I know, and to their hard-working families. They all bust their tails from morning to dawn to make every trip perfect! Also, thank you to my friend Javier at The Old Mill. He’s the #1 chef in San Quintin and the #1 bartender! He makes every meal to perfection, and all his drinks are on point. Here are some pictures from Labor Day Weekend 2024 Trip with the Schindler Boys. … Ralph Buda Penilla.

It’s been an extra slow week on the water with hurricane style pre landfall wind and clouds. It all fizzled out before coming close to town. Add to that a 400 kilometer Baja off-road race followed by Independence day. It’s just a temporary bump in the fishing season. This is what to expect in our below the border states! This coming week should be better on the water with both the winds and afternoon temperatures coming down to the proper September data points. I have a box of lovely frozen squid in the freezer that is wanting a trip to “Lagrimas” for pintos and cabrilla.Rick Hill

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
September 15th, 2024Most boats were taken out of the marina Tuesday and Wednesday as we experienced Tropical Storm Ileana on Thursday and Friday. Winds were not too bad averaging around 30 mph. We did get a lot of rain in our area, which was much needed. We took advantage of this off week to detail and do some maintenance on the boats as we prep for our busy October/November season.

The port was reopened Saturday morning. The boats that fished this weekend reported catching some small yellowfin tuna, dorado, and marlin (blue and striped). All of these species were caught offshore while trolling lures looking for surface activity. This upcoming week, we will most likely focus on San Luis, Iman, and Gordo as many boats reported seeing big schools of bait this weekend…Good Fishing, Brian B

Pisces Sportfishing Fleet Report September 6-12, 2024

As September settled in, the weather remained consistent with clear skies and calm seas. The wave heights are in the 3 to 4-foot range, and the sea temperatures continue to hold in the low eighties, along with matching air temperatures. The variety of species began with a weekend filled with Billfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado, and the numbers of Wahoo have continued to creep up.
All species combined comprise 97.2% Billfish, 62.50% Dorado 52.08%, Tuna 54.17%, and Other 27.08%.…. That Baja Guy
