Yellowtail fishing has been slow for several weeks now. There are still some yellows around, but the volume of fish has moved on, probably to San Clemente Island, as the yellowtail population there has increased. Anyway, there are still a few around. Slow trolling sardine or mackerel along the weather side of North Island, down the ridge in the Middle Grounds to the Gun Site area, the Lee of South Island, and the Ribbon Kelp area are all your best bets right now. A few legal-size barracuda have started to show up here lately. Most are in the Lee of South Island in the Ribbon Kelp area. There are no big bonito around the Islands proper, but some are near the Canyon, just a few miles to the SW.
Lastly, there is decent bass fishing in the Middle Islands area and some at the South Island spots. Many rockfish, whitefish, and sheepshead are biting at most any deeper rocky spot…Fish Dope.
**** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

It is starting to calm down, but mid-afternoon Winds of 20 to 25 knots will remain for another couple of weeks, along with cold water temps. Halibut are beginning to show up now!..Shari Bondy

Water and air temps are heating up. Multiple marlin hooked off Mulege this week, with yellowtail still thick in the deep (250 to 300 feet). …Nathan Burbey

What a fabulous day with a couple of big yellowtail and a bonito. However, the “catch of the day” took two of us to bring it in. It was the largest roosterfish I’ve seen in my 40 years of fishing. A Monster – maybe 120 pounds!!! Thank you, Captain Abraham!

MEXICAN MINUTE LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter
Sportfishing for May 31-June 9, 2024

This week, we saw excellent fishing for multiple species. We had outstanding action for tuna, large skip jack, marlin, and dorado.
The tuna have been associated with the porpoise, between 15 and 20 miles outside. We’ve seen fish anywhere between football-size and 200 pounds. We got a nice fish weighing about 180 pounds. It was a little lighter after a shark came and got a couple of bites. We’ve seen many sharks over the past couple of weeks.
The fishing was spectacular this week. About 10 miles in front of Cabo Pulmo , floating debris was present. This gave us excellent flyfishing action for the small and medium-sized dorado that hovered around the debris.
We also had outstanding action for marlin this past week, with most boats raising multiple fish per day. Most boats could catch from two to four on average daily, and often saw many more. Some had great action on the fly during that time.
The rooster action has also been steady from the boat and the beach. We’re seeing good schools of mullet along the beaches, providing action for those anglers rooster fishing from the beach. From the boats, we’ve had consistent action for small-to-medium fish. There’s plenty of sardina available in the area for bait.
We did have some windy conditions late in the week, and it’s pretty windy today. The forecast predicts wind, but the anglers will succeed if the fishing remains like it was this past week. …Jeff DeBrown

It was a quiet week at our local Marina area. The village fiestas of La Playa usually begin the last couple of days of May and extend towards the first days of June. The fiestas were delayed a week this year, so work activities will remain slow. Only moderate numbers of anglers are in town, taking advantage of calmer weather patterns, sunny skies, and temperatures in the high 80s. Bait supplies included caballito, jurelito, ballyhoo, mullet, moonface, and sardina.
The main focus this week has been the bottom fishing and inshore fishing. The tuna and wahoo bite is almost nonexistent. We only accounted for one yellowfin and one wahoo all week, each weighing under 30 pounds. Most boats focus on different rock structures throughout La Fortuna and Cardon. Fishing bigger live bait has produced big amberjack, grouper, and dogtooth snapper. The largest amberjack caught was a 76-pounder, while we saw many quality fish over 40 pounds. The favorite bait seems to be caballito and moon-face, if we can get some from the bait guys. It is not a guarantee. Live sardina continue to attract good numbers of yellow snapper and grouper.
We had a decent marlin bite throughout most of the week. Many boats focus on the inner and outer Gordos, as plenty of bait seems to be out there. Not a lot of dorado, though some boats were lucky to find small schools while fishing offshore for marlin or inshore for roosterfish. Most of these dorado are small, averaging 10 or 12 pounds, and have mainly been hitting Ballyhoo and marlin lures.
Closer to shore, we are starting to see big roosters. The biggest one was well over 60 pounds, caught on a live mullet. The best areas to target these roosters are La Laguna and Zacaton. We can pick up a few dorado while trolling live sardina and mullet throughout these shorelines. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictsona few dorado. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

The fish were released in a healthy state, just three miles offshore in the Cerro Colorado area on Monday; seventy-six-year-old Peter Gelfand from California took just 20 minutes to release this beauty on a 60-pound test in 83-degree water on a Verde con Negro Cerro lure that weighed around 200 pounds on the “BILL COLLECTOR II,” with Captain Lopez running the 35-foot Cabo Flybridge, and Mate Martinez overseeing the cockpit.
