AUGUST 28, 2023 ~ A VISIT FROM HILARY
FISHING REPORT BY TOM GATCH
It may be a common annual occurrence for late summer hurricanes south of the Baja peninsula, impacting the fishing far to the north. However, no one expected to encounter a hurricane like Hilary, which maintained hurricane status up the coast through central Baja before degenerating into a tropical storm.
This turn of events played havoc with the fishing conditions around Isla Cedros, which, up to this point, had been improving steadily in providing excellent fishing for an expanded variety of species that were becoming available for visiting anglers.
While Hilary brought fierce winds and heavy rain to the Island that swept through the arroyos, dragging tons of debris directly through the local waters, our Magic Lodge was spared from significant storm damage. We only needed to patch a few leaky roofs. The fact that our well-built facilities sit on higher grounds overlooking the ocean once again provides us with a valuable advantage. ….More

Summer is winding down, and the Mag Bay area fishing season is winding up.
The water at Thetis is 83 degrees, which is pretty warm…

The water is almost red with all the baby lobster on the surface of the water and is lousy with dorado moving by the boat just below the lobster. It’s an iconic time of year out there.
Then the boy went out and found some 12.5-kilo yellowfin tuna and the pesky dorado. One guy caught two dorado on one Rapala with two treble hooks!
Lots of fun outside the Boca Soledad now! There are only a few reports of solo wahoo catches so far—still, it’s early for them.
But we might need a storm to pass by to cool the water down to perfect wahoo temperature—75 to 77 degrees. …Cherie King

Gordo Banks Pangas

With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Eric Lee Brictson, owner and operator of Gordo Banks Pangas. Over the last 38 years, Eric Brictson has been a fishing pioneer in La Playita and an integral part of this community. From always lending a helping hand to putting La Playita fishing on the map—Eric did it best!
He fished for many years, wrote many fish reports that reached worldwide, and taught many of our fellow Captains how to fish. He always cared about protecting endangered fish species and made it a point to release young ones to continue procreating, keeping the fishing community in business. He cared very deeply for his clients, friends, captains and family. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends, watching baseball, writing, eating good food, spending time with his animals, and telling his infamous stories to anyone who would listen!
He will be remembered for his vast fishing knowledge and his legacy of running a successful business over the last 38 years. Eric’s Sunday fish reports will be missed but not forgotten. We ask for privacy while we grieve and get our affairs in order. We thank you for your understanding and will update all of our wonderful clients as soon as we have more information regarding the future of Gordo Banks Pangas.

Los Cabos
Conditions remained remarkably stable for the week of August 30 through September 6, 2023, with clear skies, calm seas, light breezes, and favorable sea temps hovering in the 85 to 86-degree range.

Although anglers caught some dorado last week, they released more because of their small size.

The yellowfin tuna caught throughout the week were the attention-getters in size and quantity, and adding a little variety were the skipjack that were tagging along with the larger tuna. The skipjack were content to feast on the scraps of bait that the tuna missed.
