If you fish the Coronado Islands or anywhere in Baja (Norte),
please send reports and photos to gary.1940@gmail.com.
Coronado Islands / Rockpile
Lower 9 Mile Bank
It is still excellent fishing for Rockfish here.
The best action, however, is coming from 400 to 700 feet, with a wide range of Rockfish showing, including Reds, Bocaccios, Mexicans, Boscos, and more. Both bait and jigs are producing. Anchovy, sardines, and squid are all working well. For those who prefer to fish with jigs, a 300 to 400-gram Knife Jig works great. On another note, a heads-up for anglers—expect an encounter with the Mexican Navy. They have been active, patrolling the waters and ensuring regulations are followed. It’s wise to have your paperwork ready for a smooth journey. Gather all legal documents for everyone aboard and store them in a single large Ziploc bag for easy access. Your efficiency will not go unnoticed!
In the kaleidoscope of Baja’s fishing scene, its undeniable charm lies in the abundant catches and the untold stories beneath the waves. A great outing here is more than just fishing — it is also connecting with nature’s rhythm, sharing camaraderie, and etching memories that far exceed the tides
Coronado Islands / Rockpile
It has been status quo here.
Halibut have been biting inside San Diego Bay, but the action has somewhat slowed, and it is hit-or-miss. The best action is still happening in the back of the Bay near Pepper Park, but other spots, like the entrance to America’s Cup Harbor, still produce. A light line is key, with 10 to 12-pound test being the preferred choice. Drifting a live anchovy is hands-down the top tactic. Anchovy will out-fish sardine 10-to-1 in the bay, so stick with the right bait. Use just enough weight to stay on the bottom without getting hung up.
Del Mar / La Jolla / Point Loma / Imperial Beach
By the way, small bonito have been showing at times in the Pepper Park area. Guys fly-lining an anchovy on six-pound test and a #4 hook have scored the most. There have been no Yellowtail seen in La Jolla recently. Bass fishing in the La Jolla area is slow, and it’s even slower farther out.
South, the Bass fishing in the Point Loma area is also rated as slow. Down at the Imperial Beach Pipe, the Sand Bass bite has been fair using the knocker leadhead and squid rig. A few Sculpins are showing as well.
For those targeting Halibut, the IB Pipe still holds potential. There are lots of Whitefish at Buoy #3. Use small strips of Squid on small hooks, and you should get some good action. However, for those venturing to the islands, a word of caution: the Mexican Navy has been highly active, and inspections are frequent. To ensure smooth sailing, it’s wise to gather all legal documents for everyone aboard and store them in a single large Ziploc bag for easy access—your efficiency will not go unnoticed!

The San Felipe area offers excellent fishing opportunities year-round. Currently, anglers are targeting species like Yellowtail, Halibut, Corvina, and White Seabass, which are abundant. The waters are calm, making it ideal for fishing trips. The weather in San Felipe is clear and sunny. The current temperature is 61°F. Tomorrow, expect a high of 77°F and a low of 56°F, with sunny skies and only a 4% chance of precipitation.

I was out fishing at the Golden Reef with my friend Mr. Jeff Marvin and his buddy, Benton. It was rough on the Reef, but the Yellowtail were busting out on the surface. We spent most of the day running to spots of breaking fish! …Okay…fish…onnn!
I’ll be fishing Gonzaga Bay all of June. I have openings to fish GB at the islands, and down south, including the Middle Grounds and the Golden Reef.

Good morning, Gary, we had a little weather this past week was pretty good winds from the north. Fishing was fair, not great, due to the weather. We did see some nice fish from the beach one day, but the next day was kinda unusable with the wind and the waves. There are a few fish on the beach and offshore. The first two Blue Marlin have been caught this year. The Marlin fishing is kind of hidden, Miss. Currently, the tuna have been out there about 40 miles, but again, with the weather, not a lot of people went out there last week, closer to home. The people who are trolling for tune in wahoo. There are a couple of wahoo here and there, the occasional Dorado. Overall, fishing is fair. I’m gonna be on the boat today looking around for a few things, and I’ll report this afternoon. Kind of what the fleet does and what we find as should be a pretty nice day today…Jeff DeBrown

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

Morning temperatures have taken a turn as we start to feel more heat and humidity. Mornings are averaging low 70s with hot sunny days in the mid 80s.
The highlight this week was the excellent offshore Wahoo bite. The best action came throughout the surrounding areas of the 1150 Bank. Some boats had success between both Gordos, and a few miles out of the outer Gordo. Most of these Wahoo were big, averaging 50 to 60 pounds. The biggest caught was an 83-pounder by Spencer Foster and Captain Marcelo that came on a Nomad DTX between the outer and inner Gordo. This weekend, over 20 big Wahoo were reported in the panga area. These strikes came on rigged Ballyhoo, marlin lures, X Raps, and Nomad DTXs. Many reports confirmed that these Wahoo have been active in the 78 to 80-degree clear blue water.
While searching for Wahoo, some boats landed a handful of large Dorado and a few Striped Marlin. Most boats reported seeing Marlin, though they weren’t interested in the bait.
Some lucky boats also found porpoise schools a few miles outside the outer Gordo, with exceptional Yellowfin action. However, the Tuna with these porpoise schools were football-sized, with 30 to 40-pounders in the mix. One 100-pound Tuna was caught earlier at Vinorama on a live caballito. This was the only big Tuna reported this week.
Most of the Roosterfish were on the smaller side, ranging from 5 to 10 pounds, although we did see some larger ones in the 20 to 25-pound range taken on the larger caballitos. The best Rooster action occurred along the shorelines of the Marriott, La Bocana, and Trailer Park. This Saturday, one boat reported landing and releasing 15 to 20 Roosters in the first couple of hours of the morning. Some boats also caught Snapper using small mullet, caballito, and Rapalas at La Bocana. The bait guys continue to net caballito and mullet in the mornings; however, supplies can be limited. Still no luck with live sardina…Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

Kyle Brooks, from California, chartered the “Adriana,” a 28-foot Uniflite, with Captain Frank and Mate Arturo. The crew’s years of experience, exceptional skills, and the angler’s excellent fishing abilities resulted in the catch and release of nine Striped Marlin, weighing 100 to 140 pounds, on bait and feathers. This outstanding day of fishing serves as an inspiration for others to book their successful trips.
Captain Carmelo and Mates Brian and Juan on the “EL CAZADOR,” a 29-foot Black Fin, had their angler, Pancho Bojorquez, from Cabo San Lucas, BCS, MX, catch and release two 100 to 120-pound Striped Marlin on Ballyhoo, and three 10 to 15-pound Yellowfin Tuna on bait at the 95 Spot. They had a fun day, filled with the excitement of their catch!
Captain Lopez and Mate Martinez welcomed John Williams and Nancy Scouler from San Diego aboard the “BILL COLLECTOR II,” a 31-foot Bertram. They headed straight for the Herradura, where the guests caught fourteen Yellowfin Tuna in the 10 to 20-pound range. It could not have been a more enjoyable day.
