The yellows decided to bite for some today.
A good number of Yellowtail have been caught in the La Jolla area recently. The bite has been hit or miss; some days, they show, and some days, there is no sign of them. When they are eating, they come on live bait, surface irons, yoyos, and trolled Rapalas.
These Yellowtail typically chase bait around from Torrey Pines to Mission Bay this time of year. They follow the edges of the structure, in and along the kelp lines. Watch for meter marks and birds in this area. They may pop up on the surface, so have a jig stick ready if they do. If they are down in the water column, trolling deep-diving lures and dropping yoyos on them works well.
Halibut fishing has been good recently, with the best action happening in San Diego Bay. Lots of the Halibut are “shorts,” but a decent number are caught, from legal to the low 20-pound class. Sardines and anchovies are both working well. Sand Bass are biting the lead head and squid combo at the Imperial Beach Pipe. There are quite a few Sculpin caught here. Along the IB Pipe, there is still a chance of scoring Halibut.
Coronado Islands
A good volume of Yellowtail are now showing around the Islands, and they decided to bite live bait, surface irons, and Yoyo irons. Often, these fish bounce around the Islands and don’t stay in one spot. Some common areas to find them include Pukey Point at North Island, throughout the Middle Grounds, and in the lee of South Island.
Some ways to stay mobile and find the fish include slow-trolling a sardine or mackerel and trolling a Rapala or other deep-diving lure.
There is also some decent fishing for Bass, Sculpin, Sheepshead, and Whitefish. …
With so few boats fishing the Islands, reports are hard to come by. If you’ve fished the Islands recently, your report could make a big difference. Please share it with us at Reports@fishdope.com.… Fish Dope

Lopez Mateos – Mag Bay is amazing, as always. The mangroves are magnificent and lush with Cormorants, Osprey, Great Egrets, Night Heron.
Fishing from Las Animas to Curva del Diablo for Snook, Palometta, Corvina, Pargo, Grouper, Trigger, and Halibut is great casting fun for us non-fly fishermen as well as fly fishermen.
Fishing outside the Soledad Boca in the Grouper Rock areas is already productive: California Sheepshead, Pargo, Huichinango, Grouper, and Trigger. Still a lot of whale activity as they are starting to head north. Come on over and check us out if you have never been here before…CHERI

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

A few local pangeros reported big Yellowfin Tuna at the Inner Gordo on Thursday and Friday. Overall, five Tuna were landed on both days, all averaging 110 to 140 pounds; a few more fish were lost after long battles, and all were hooked on strips of squid. A couple of boats tried using the kite technique and were slow-trolling live skipjack or chiwili, but did not get any hits. A few more boats tried the Gordo but came in empty-handed. Wind conditions
were not ideal this weekend, as we had some North winds pick up early in the morning.
We are not seeing action on the jigs, but there is a good chance of landing a few nice quality fish if you put in the work and focus on multiple rock structures in the area. We had a nice handful of Amberjack,
Yellowtail, Grouper, and Snapper this week. We had one Amberjack that weighed nearly 80 pounds. Most of this jigging action came from San Luis, Vinorama, La Fortuna, and Palmilla. Most boats fished closer to shore this week with live and dead sardina. On most days, we were able to land limits of Sierra (Spanish Mackerel). Pompano, Snapper, and Grouper were also caught within the same area. The best action came throughout the shorelines of the Hilton, the Weston, and the Palmilla. Some Jacks and small Roosters were spotted in the mix while trolling live sardina and caballito. We see live sardina almost every morning. The bait guys continue to net them around the jetty rock structures adjacent to the marina. No Marlin or Dorado were reported in our area this week.…Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

“EL CAZADOR,” a 29-foot Black Fin, run by the highly experienced Captain Carmelo Navarrete, welcomed the Guardi family from California aboard. The El Cazador runs up to 32 knots and cruises at 24 knots comfortably. She is a superb fishing boat with a clean, unobstructed cockpit and seating for four, plus a comfortable interior. Andre Guardi, Dante Guardi, and Roman Guardi caught a nice-sized Dorado weighing 28 pounds on bait at the 1150 Spot. They were looking forward to some delicious fillets for dinner that evening.
