Coronado Islands/Rockpile

Although there has been a slower bite recently, there is still a good volume of yellows at the Rockpile. The Islands and the Rockpile have been seeing some good yellowtail fishing, and while they bit well yesterday, today, it was harder to get a bite.
The weather conditions were best on the north side of North Island and the Rockpile. The water was green but clean enough, and the temperature was 60 degrees. There is cold, dirty water just east of the Islands. The yellows are mostly being found by sonar marks, and they are biting the Yoyos. …Fish Dope

                   **** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Ensenada

 Salsipuedes/Ensenada/PuntaBanda/SantoTomas/Isolete

Lately, there have been yellowtail around the Punta Banda area. Some days, they bite. Other days, they don’t. The fish are mainly in the 15 to 25-pound class. When showing, they are breezing under birds and biting mint-colored surface iron.
The local boats have reported yellows at Salsipuedes and down the coast at Isolete.
Look for bird piles and bait popping up.
If you want rockfish, the bite is excellent down at Santo Tomas! … Fish Dope

A young couple with their remarkable days catch of 9 yellowfin tuna in a single day.

We had ideal conditions this week with clear sunny skies, lows of around 65, and highs near 85 degrees. The slight ocean swells and minimal winds allowed us to fish the tuna grounds comfortably. Due to the hot tuna bite, our marina had a busy week.

Our main fishing highlight was the yellowfin tuna bite at Iman Bank, caught with live and dead sardina. This week, we noticed that the tuna bite was best earlier in the morning. Most Captains reported that the yellowfin would only come up for an hour or two and was best Monday through Friday. It was slower throughout the weekend. Monday was the best day as most boats returned early with over seven tuna per boat. Most of these averaged around 20 to 30 pounds, though we had some big ones in the mix. This week’s largest yellowfin weighed 122 pounds and was caught on a dead sardina. We had many weighing between 70 and 100 pounds, but we mostly used 40 and 50# test, as they could be finicky. There was still a good chance of landing one of the big ones on this gear. You had to be extra careful, and the battle might still be long. According to our clients, the struggle on the 122-pounder was close to two hours. Many locals tried throughout the afternoon but reported almost no bites or surface activity.

We also caught a handful of dorado and wahoo within the same Iman grounds. Most of the dorado were on the smaller side. We saw some bigger wahoo this week, with the biggest weighing close to 40 to 54 pounds. All of this action came on live sardina while fishing for tuna.

We did not focus much on the bottom or inshore this week. The boats that fished some rock structures in Cardon did catch yellow snapper, grouper, and a few amberjack. Closer to shore, we continued to see Spanish mackerel (sierra), Jack crevalle, and roosterfish. On Friday, one of our boats focused on roosterfish for a few hours and reported releasing seven nice ones.

We see the last few humpback whales in our area as they migrate north for the summer. …Good Fishing Brian Brictson

Cabo San Lucas

Week 17 began with weather similar to the preceding week – calm seas, clear skies, afternoon breezes never exceeding 8-kts, and sea temps ranging from 69 to 74 degrees F.
Most of the Pisces fleet followed their lead from the previous week, which had been best in the Punta Gordo area for striped marlin plus nice-sized yellowfin tuna.

The boat "My Way" with thr333 qnglers and their yellowfin tuna.

However, Captain Arturo, with Mates Daniel and Joel aboard the “MY WAY,” a 45-foot Viking, had information that the Iman Bank, traditionally attracting the yellowfin this time of the year farther up in the Sea of Cortez, had been productive for a few boats. They followed the lead, and the gamble paid off for Marshall Cromer from Oakland, California. By the end of the day, he had landed two yellowfin weighing 45 to 50 pounds and several grouper in the area on live sardina.

Last week, as mentioned, a handful of banks consistently produced throughout the week. The “RUTHLESS,” a 31-foot Bertram with Captain Beto Lira and Mate Jesus Romero, added another to our growing list.
