On Friday, a few 15 to 20-pound yellowtail were caught from sonar marks near the Rockpile in 150 to 180 feet of water. All the yellows that were caught came on Yoyo iron.
Yesterday, several boats hit the area for nothing. No signs – and no sonar schools were found.
They did find excellent fishing for many kinds of red rockfish, sheepshead, whitefish, and a decent amount of 6 to 12-pound lingcod..Fish Dope
**** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

Hi Gary we left Chivato last week. Back AZ now. We did good on Yellowtail however. Lots of action at Wilber’s hole and outside Chivato Lighthouse. The Yellowtail were chasing Pin head size bait. With boils everywhere from 75 ft out to 300 ft depth Theresa got most on throwing Iron. Some caught on x raps ,and some on healthy Greenback Mac’s. We caught at the Cliffs, in between Our place and Mulege. Got a report of big Cabrilla same area. Most released. To breed again. Headed back late May for the June Tournament. MEXICAN MINUTE VIDEO LA PAZ FISHING REPORT from Tailhunter Sportfishing for the Week of April 3-10, 2024

We had windy conditions early in the week, keeping most everyone off the water. By midweek, we experienced cool mornings, warming to pleasant temperatures, and caught the first tuna of the year. The yellowfin tuna were located at the Tuna Slides just north of town, and we found the tuna and lots of skip jack.
The anglers lucky enough to hook tuna instead of skip jack were rewarded with nice-sized fish – most between 40 and 70 pounds. You had to be there early because by 8 a.m. yesterday, there were already 40 boats in the area.
We also fished for roosterfish and had great action. Fishing is getting better, and we are seeing more roosters daily.
Our best fishing was to our North in the canyon, but we also had good action closer to home, from La Ribera to the lighthouse. Most of the roosters we encountered were offshore, in the deeper water. Although a few fish were closer to shore, the best action was in about 80 feet of water. It’s springtime here, and fishing is heating up. …Jeff de Brown, Reel Baja
April 14, 2024
Things have been quiet around our marina area this week. Even though we still had a good number of charters go out, the weather is beginning to feel much warmer, and we can tell the slow season is settling in. We expect to have temperatures in the mid-80s next week.

This week was surprising with the number of yellowfin caught. Monday was the most productive day of the week, and we experienced the solar eclipse out on the water. One of our boats came in early with ten nice-sized yellowfin that day, with the biggest weighing 75 pounds. This unexpected bite was at San Luis Bank with live and dead sardina. Tuesday and Wednesday were good days to catch tuna, though the wind blew both days. The bite slowed down again over the weekend; however, we still see a handful at the fillet station. We continue to see tuna that weigh over 80 pounds daily. The biggest one seen this week was 145 pounds caught on a dead sardina. A few Captains reported hooking some giant tuna on live skipjack, though they could not land them. Most of the bigger tuna caught this week came from San Luis. A handful of smaller ones came from Iman Bank.
We continue to see wahoo while drifting sardina for tuna. A few boats have been lucky to catch them on sardina and circle hooks. Most of these wahoo are averaging 15 to 20 pounds. Many of our Captains believe the wahoo bite could be good earlier in the morning with Rapalas and rigged ballyhoo. We have not been targeting wahoo – we focus most of our time on the yellowfin bite. We also saw more dorado towards the end of the week. A few boats reported finding floating buoys while looking for marlin 10 to 15 miles out. These boats did great as they caught double-digit fish with a few 30-pounders.
Towards the end of the week, the fleet reported good striped marlin action at Iman while drifting sardina for tuna. We have continued catching a good mix of grouper, snapper, and amberjack throughout the rock piles in Iman, La Fortuna, and Cardon. Surprisingly, we also had a yellowtail weighing almost 20 pounds. Inshore action remains consistent with Sierra (Spanish mackerel) and a few nicer roosterfish. We did see a few larger roosterfish this week, most averaging around 15 to 25 pounds. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

April Fool’s Day has faded into oblivion, leaving behind a great week of spring-like weather with sea temps in the low 70s and calm seas that have settled in for the week. As we mentioned in last week’s report, the striped marlin reappeared, and “La Chingona” released seven at the infamous Punta Gordo Bank, giving the rest of our Pisces fleet something to shoot for.

“Valerie” a 35-foot Bertram with Captain Roberto Sandez and Mates Carlos and Julio, also scored on Punta Gorda with a pair of Stripers that Darren and Jean Thraen from Boston, Massachusetts, released. The two Marlin weighed an estimated 100 pounds plus each and took a trolled cocinero.
As it turned out, the action was not only restricted to marlin, nor just one of the banks, but also to Faro, Pedregal, and Afuera del Cerro, which produced a variety of species, including Striped Marlin, Silky Shark, Skipjack, Dorado, Sierra, Red Snapper, and Jack Crevalle.

Captain Frank and Mate Carlos Velez aboard the ” ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite, suggested Alvin Ekic, Gordon Yliniemi, Mike Piller, and Mustafa Ekic from North Dakota fish at Faro Bank. Gordon was the lucky angler who released the striped marlin at that Bank, some distance from Gordo Bank. The anglers also caught chunky dorado.
