Bajabytes Sport Fishing Weekly Update 4.10.24
It’s hard to believe that it‘s early April already! An excellent grade of yellowtail and grouper are biting between the cranky weather systems at Ensenada, San Quintin, and BOLA.

Pier is a great fishery. However, the water is highly contaminated and often looks dirty. I still recommend it for Catch ‘n Release! I wouldn’t do a “catch and cook” with any fish off this pier, but many folks do. It’s a great, fun place with tons of species. …Fishfinderfabian

SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH LATE MONDAY NIGHT! The most recent dope about ten days ago concerned good rockfish action, but the information indicated the yellowtail fishery was slow. Some yellows were metered near the Rockpile around 180 feet below the surface, but they were not interested in taking Yoyo iron.
It’s hard to say if they will still be around after this weather system rolls through. It might take a few days to straighten out. ..Fish Dope
**** ATTENTION ****
You must stay at least 250 meters (820 feet) away from tuna pens. If you don’t, you risk losing your boat and landing in a Mexican jail.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
April 7, 2024: This is a great time to visit, as weather conditions are ideal. We have moderate crowds, and fishing action has remained consistent and full of surprises.
Ocean water temperatures are now in the 70 to 72-degree range. Bait supplies have included live sardina, ballyhoo, and a few green jack (cocinero). Most fishing activity has been concentrated on Cardon, La Fortuna, Iman, and San Luis grounds.
Most of our fleet this week focused on targeting yellowfin tuna. Even though the numbers were not great, we did see a few productive days this week. Friday, our fleet had six fish that weighed over 60 pounds, with two over the 100-pound mark. The highlight this week was a 125-pound tuna caught on a dead sardina. These tuna have been finicky, though most captains still report seeing them chasing the sardina. Some of the local pangeros reported better action later in the day. We had at least a few big tuna brought daily to the fillet station. The best area for tuna continues to be Iman.
Bottom action is showing signs of improvement. Bonito were still the most common species found while working the rock piles with Yoyo jigs. However, we did see a few more leopard grouper, amberjack, and red snapper (huachinango) caught on the jigs. Working the bottom with live sardina, we also caught a mix of barred pargo, yellow snapper, and triggerfish, all very good-eating species. The best bottom action seems to come from various Cardon rock structures.
A handful of dorado were scattered throughout these same grounds, with a few over 25 pounds. We did see fewer dorado this week compared to the previous weeks. We also saw a handful of wahoo, most caught while fishing for tuna on live sardina.
Close to shore along the stretches of beach, good numbers of roosterfish have been striking on live sardina. Most of these roosterfish are juvenile-sized fish under 15 pounds. We are also catching good numbers of sierra (Spanish mackerel), with a few close to 10 pounds. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson

“MY WAY,” a 45-foot Viking, with Captain Arturo and Mates Daniel and Josue, eagerly awaited their group from Oakland, California. There had been some tempting info about yellowfin tuna on the Iman Bank, 22 miles up on the Sea of Cortez side of the Peninsula.
The captain outlined where they were going and why, and the group could barely contain their enthusiasm. They got there quickly with the light breezes and calm sea.
