Coronado Islands – The 20-pound class Yellowtail, being somewhat hit and miss, continue to play games with the boats. The best signs of YT are located on the ridge that runs through the Middle Grounds to the Gun Site. There are fewer numbers along the weather side of the North Island and down at SKR.
The fish are not showing all day. Instead, they appear for a few minutes and then disappear. Watch for birds, and be ready to act quickly, casting with a well-placed surface iron.
Stay mobile. The Sea Lions are brutal. If you anchor and run a chum line, they will be all over your line.

In other news, there are many Halibut in the sand on the Flats, and they are hungry and biting. These bites are happening on the lee side of the Middle Grounds, and anglers are picking away at them by drifting live bait near the bottom.
Both Ribbon Kelp and South Kelp are showing early signs of Barracuda activity. Legal-sized fish are expected to start showing up in better numbers soon.

There are no new reports of Yellowtail. Last week, they were scattered around North and South of Ensenada. The 10 to 20-pound grade Yellowtail were reported to be biting fly-lined mackerel and surface iron off Salsipuedes, Todos Santos, and Punta Banda. We also received a few reports of a larger 20 to 30-pound grade of Yellows eating yoyo iron farther South in the Santo Tomas/Isolete area. This time of year, those Yellowtail often head North. They move into the Upper Finger/Rockpile area and the Coronados. It’s worth keeping an eye on those areas in the coming weeks. Calm sea conditions make for great fishing.

Sand Bass are biting great in the Imperial Beach area at the Pipe. Anchovy and squid fished on a leadhead are working well. Hookup bait also works well.

Once in a while, Yellowtail pop up, but on other days they are MIA. When they are biting, they usually come on trolled Rapalas, slow-trolled sardine, mackerel, or even surface iron cast at breezing fish under birds. Yoyo iron dropped down on meter-marks often gets the job done.

on my Heaven's Half Acre

I landed at LAX from Malaga, Spain, last week. It took a day to dial in my fire safety protocol at the cabin with a weed whacker on my Heaven’s Half Acre. I packed up my trusty Baja Beast and headed down to the Baja Casita with Kurt Schaefer to see how many Yellowtail we could catch.

We had a beautiful, non-eventful drive to Cortez Paradise, and for the next eight days, we enjoyed some epic weather, awesome fishing, and witnessed some marine mammal magic. Humpback Whales feeding on massive hordes of anchovies, and a huge school of dolphins where well over 1,000 were boat-side, having their way with more bait resources — all over smooth seas and the watchful eye of full moons rising nightly.

Large Yellowtail were biting, and so were we!! We enjoyed a few insane meals…one at Los Viendos, and the last night…a Birthday celebration for Kurt at Lizzy’s Grill, with long-time friends, Chris Wheaton and Earl Roberts enjoying Brandt Beef Filet Mignon, a fresh platter of Yellowtail sashimi, Mexican Style, and some fried fresh Calamari that have invaded the local bay waters.

Life is to be lived! And by doing so, it serves as a constant reminder that every day counts. Make each of them worthy of your memories.

I just watched the Starlink Rocket Launch here in Chivato. It was awesome! Did you see it from there? Anyway, we just returned. We had been gone for five months. Yesterday was our first day out, and Theresa caught (maybe) the First Dorado of the season here in Chivato! Also, she caught a 50-pound Amberjack! The tournament is coming up this Friday and Saturday.

All is well…

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

In terms of charters and fish brought to the fillet tables, this has been a slow week at our marina.
The caballito supply has been down significantly compared to previous weeks. The bait guys were able to net more mullet than caballito this week, which works just as well for Roosterfish. Roosterfish action remains good, although it can be challenging to focus specifically on this type of fishing due to the low bait supply on some days. However, action has been reported throughout the Hotel Zone shoreline (Trailer Park), La Bocana, and La Laguna. We have seen larger Roosters throughout the coastline of San Luis, some of which weigh in the 40 to 50-pound range.

Most boats focused inshore for the first few hours of the morning and then headed offshore to look for Marlin, Dorado, or Wahoo. There has been little action reported throughout the week. This weekend was much better as most boats hooked into multiple Marlin. We saw a handful of large Dorado (from 30 to 45 pounds) and a couple of big Wahoo. Most of these strikes came on rigged ballyhoo and marlin lures. We covered these areas, including the Gordos and Calderon, as well as the 1150 Bank. Many boats reported spotting large schools of Dorado, although they wouldn’t bite on lures or ballyhoo; these boats did not have live caballito to throw to them.

There is not much bottom action to report this week. One of our boats specifically tried 10 to 12 different rock piles and reefs on Friday (with four anglers) and reported zero strikes (fishing both jigs and live bait).

Good Fishing, Brian Brictson
