Top Baja Fishing Spots for June 2025

What are the best fishing spots in Baja right now?

Coronado Islands – Spring conditions are shifting, but the Yellowtail are still a possibility. Slow-trolled sardines and mackerel are working well, and yoyo and surface irons are rewarding persistent anglers.

Todos Santos – Halibut action is promising, especially with mini-macs in the shallow range. Barracuda are following anchovy schools, making surface irons a great choice.

Ensenada – Offshore waters are showing strong potential for Dorado, Barracuda, Yellowtail, and both Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna. Inshore fishing is also productive, with Corvina, Perch, Seabass, and Calico bass providing steady action.

San Jaime Bank & Golden Gate Bank (Cabo San Lucas) – These spots are excellent for Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado (Mahi-Mahi). The warm water temperatures and calm sea conditions make for great fishing.

More Yellowtail were caught here again today, and it seems like there is a steady trickle of Yellowtail with some big fish being caught in the La Jolla area. They are biting on trolled Rapala, slow-trolled sardine, or mackerel. Surface irons cast at breezing fish under birds, and yoyo irons dropped on meter marks are good choices as well.

There have been some Barracuda in the La Jolla and Point Loma areas, with anglers seeing good numbers of just short Barracuda, along with short Calico Bass, mostly caught on fly-lined anchovies. Only a few of the Bass have been legal-sized, and roughly 5 to 10% of them are barely legal-size fish running 28″ to 29.″

Rockfish action here is excellent at the 32, 270, and Widow Rock Spots.Fish Dope.com

Coronado Islands

Coronado Islands / Rockpile
Improving water conditions are getting the Yellowtail back into the biting mood. There aren’t a lot of volume here, but there is enough to warrant focusing on fishing for them.
Currently, the ridge running from the Middle Grounds to the Gun Site appears to be the most productive, with anglers scoring with fly line sardines and yoyo iron when the fish pass by underneath.
Slow-trolling sardines might also be an effective technique. Maybe try trolling up and down the weather side of the North Island, or from Ribbon Kelp to the Lighthouse Kelp, and then to the South Kelp? Just ideas to ponder.

Lastly, if Barracuda interests you, Ribbon Kelp and South Kelp should start seeing legal-size ‘Cuda very soon.

                                    Lower 9 Mile Bank

It is still excellent fishing for Rockfish here.
The best action, however, is coming from 400 to 700 feet, with a wide range of Rockfish showing, including Reds, Bocaccios, Mexicans, Boscos, and more. Both bait and jigs are producing. Anchovy, sardines, and squid are all working well. For those who prefer to fish with jigs, a 300 to 400-gram Knife Jig works great. On another note, a heads-up for anglers—expect an encounter with the Mexican Navy. They have been active, patrolling the waters and ensuring regulations are followed. It’s wise to have your paperwork ready for a smooth journey. Gather all legal documents for everyone aboard and store them in a single large Ziploc bag for easy access. Your efficiency will not go unnoticed!

Coronado Islands / Rockpile

South 9 / 226-302 / Coronado Canyon / 425 / 371
Generally slow as of late but we expect to see more coverage this coming weekend.
There has been a mix of big bonito and kelp paddy yellowtail being found mainly out to the west and southwest of the Islands, down as far as the 371 and possibly farther.
The bonito numbers have greatly thinned out, and the number of kelp’s holding yellowtail isn’t very good and the kelp’s that do have yellows on them generally don’t have very many fish on them.

Not every kelp is holding. In fact most are dry but keep checking every one you find. Size doesn’t matter. Big ones or small ones. Sometimes the best kelp is just a small stringer on the surface but has a deep stringer hanging down under it.

The bonito are still big units averaging right around 8-9lbs with a few monsters up in the 12-15lb class mixed in. The yellowtail are all cookie cutter 6-8lb units. Yes the bonito are bigger than the yellowtail.
The bonito are being found by trolling jig stops, finding breezers, off bird schools and on kelps.

Landed in LAX from Malaga, Spain last week… took a day to dial my fire safety protocol at the cabin with a weed whacker on my Heaven’s Half Acre.. packed up my trusty Baja Beast and headed down to the Baja Casita with Kurt Schaefer to see how many yellowtail we can pick a fight with.
A beautiful, non-eventful drive to Cortez Paradise and for the next 8 days enjoying some epic weather, awesome fishing, and witnessing some marine mammal magic… Humpback whales were feeding on massive hordes of anchovies, and a huge school of dolphins where well over 1,000 were boat-side, having their way with more bait resources. All over smooth seas and the watchful eye of full moons rising nightly.
Big yellowtail were biting and so were we..!! Enjoying a few insane meals.. one at Los Viendos, and the last night Birthday celebration for Kurt at Lizzy’s Grill with long time friends, Chris Wheaton and Earl Roberts enjoying Brandt Beef Filet Mignon, a fresh platter of yellowtail sashimi Mexican Style and some fried fresh calamari that have invaded the local bay waters.

The Tuna have been biting well in front of Pulmo, around 38 to 40 miles from the hotel, and there are also Striped Marlin biting from Punta Pescadero to the La Ribera Banks, about 10 to 16 miles out.
Small Roosterfish were seen scattered up and down from Palmas Hotel to the Lighthouse. They have been biting best outside the Marina, but the boats are hammering them.  A few Snapper and Pompano are around for the boats that are bottom fishing.

The weather was cloudy yesterday and today, with a bit of rain starting to fall now due to the approaching depression, but it should improve by Monday.  Overall, I’d say fishing is fair, with a Tuna and a Marlin being the stars. There’s also the occasional nice Dorado mixed in the outside stuff…Jeff DeBrown

Dorado showing up!

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
May 4th, 2025

Not many of the larger tuna were reported this week at Vinorama and San Luis. We saw a couple of fish throughout the week, but the bite was very slow and spotty for most boats. This Saturday, one of our captains landed two Yellowfin, with one coming in at 78 pounds and the other at 112 pounds! The smaller was hooked on a jig, and the bigger one was on a live caballito. Ten other boats were also trying to catch tuna in the same area but had no hook-ups. Talk about being at the right spot at the right time!

The more miniature footballs are still anywhere from 35 to 50 miles out on most days. With most of the boats doing the long run, they have been successful, catching their limits quickly while chasing tuna with the porpoise schools. A handful of big wahoo have also been landed by surprise.

Two big 30 to 35-pound Dorado were caught this week, a few miles offshore from Palmilla Point on small lures. A few larger Dorado and Wahoo were reported 10 to 15 miles offshore, caught while looking for Marlin on lures and rigged Ballyhoo. Some of these Wahoo were in the 60 to 70-pound range. A few smaller Wahoo were also reported while trolling XRaps/Nomads, and rigged Ballyhoo covering the grounds of San Luis, Vinorama, and Iman. Some Dorado were reported in these grounds, as well as while slow-trolling live caballito, fast-trolling ballyhoo, and lures.

Bottom action continues to be slow and spotty on most days. Throughout the week, we had four to five Amberjack and five decent-sized Grouper. These boats reported jigging for part of the day and only having a couple of hits. A handful of Red Snapper were also caught on the jigs earlier in the morning.

Throughout our shorelines, we continue to see bigger Roosterfish come in. We are slow trolling live Caballito and Mullet. Most of these Roosterfish average 15 to 25 pounds, though we are seeing some in the 40- to 50-pound range. We are also seeing some big jacks and some Sierra while trolling for Roosters. The best action seems to be coming from San Luis (inshore), Zacatón, and La Laguna. We are still not seeing live sardines in the mornings, though we are seeing live caballito and mullet more consistently.

The most consistent bite has been the white Bonito at Vinorama and San Luis. While drifting bait for tuna, we have been able to land them while jigging. These Bonito help secure dinner as there is a big chance of striking out with these tuna.

Good Fishing, Brian Brictson.

What a week. Not only was a 256-pound Blue Marlin caught, but there were also numerous Wahoo, including five that weighed up to 50 pounds and three or four that weighed up to 80 pounds, an almost unheard-of occurrence in the past. The Striped Marlin were too plentiful to count. Most boats were catching at least two, and many were catching up to seven, eight, or nine each day. And of course, there were many other species, Roosterfish and bottom fish.  You name it, and the captains can probably find it for you. It’s time to come to Cabo and experience these unique fishing opportunities

Clay Forbes and Erin Singleton from Georgia chose the “ADRIANA,” a 28-foot Uniflite run by Captain Frank and Mate Arturo, to fish for Roosters. They headed straight to the Pueblo Bonito, where they caught five Roosterfish weighing up to 11.5 pounds and were thrilled to have them. The waters were calm, the sun was shining, and the Roosterfish put up a good fight, making for an exciting and memorable fishing experience.

Bryce Rowland chose the "TRACY ANN

Bryce Rowland chose the “TRACY ANN,” a 31-foot Bertram, with Captain Julio Castro and Mate Mario Juarez, to fish for marlin. He walked off the boat with a smile on his face after a successful day of catching and releasing five Striped Marlin weighing up to 130 pounds on bait at the Herradura and the 95 Spots. The experienced captain and mate, long-time crew members of the Pisces fleet, were just as pleased as Bryce with the successful day.
