There has been a good sand bass bite in IB, and there has also been some halibut biting in IB…fishdope.com

Sand Bass and Sculpin have been a slow pick at the IB Pipe. No signs of Yellowtail in over a month.
The best chance of scoring a legal-size Halibut along the coast appears to be on the Imperial Beach Flats and along the edge of the Imperial Beach Pipe. Another possibility is around the Yukon Wreak outside of Mission Bay. Meter around 40 to 80 feet of water and look for bait over the hard bottom; the Halibut will likely be under
the bait.

Whitefish are commonly caught around Buoy #3 and the Whistler. Squid strips
pinned on small hooks with 8 to 12 oz. of lead is the ticket for the Whitefish.

Coronado Islands

We looked at the Islands yesterday, but there were no signs of Yellows. The water
was 56 degrees and super green. The Navy was also out checking paperwork.
On Saturday, the island was found to be a dead zone, and fishing continued to be slow. Water temps were running between 54 and 56 degrees and were quite dirty. Bottom fishing was producing a handful of Rockfish and Whitefish.

There have been no signs of yellowtail at the Islands or the Rockpile for months. Some might be on the flats off Rosarito out to the Rockpile in 125 to 300 feet of water. There may be some south of there, as well, down towards the Upper Finger Bank, as this is where they usually show up when the water is cold like it is right now.
These yellowtail would be straight sonar fish in the lower third of the water column. The best bet to score will likely be with full-size Yoyo iron fished on a 40 to 50-pound test line.
Just in case you were wondering, the ‘San Diego’ will be back online for full day trips targeting Yellowtail at the Coronado’s starting on Saturday, March 15th. We can’t wait to have you on board! full day-trips targeting Yellowtail at the Coronado’s started,
Saturday, March 15th.

With so few boats fishing the Islands, reports are hard to come by. If you’ve fished the Islands recently, your report could make a big difference. Please share it with us at Reports@fishdope.com.…

The wind has been off again and on again, typical for this time of year. Inshore, the early morning calm waters, and the bait near-shore and along the beaches have provided the best opportunities to catch small Jacks, Sierra, and Roosterfish.  Although the deep-water
fishing off La Ribera Banks has slowed down for Yellowtail, it is good to hear that the White Bonito are still providing some fair action. The water temperature has been around 68 degrees and slightly off-color, which might also affect the fishing conditions. …Jeff DeBrown

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

A few local pangeros reported big Yellowfin tuna at the Inner Gordo on Thursday and Friday. Overall, 5 tuna were landed throughout both days, all of them averaging 110-140 pounds; a couple more fish were lost after long battles. All of these fish were hooked on strips of squid. A couple of boats tried using the kite technique and slow trolling live skipjack or chiwili but did not get any hits. A few more boats tried the Gordo this weekend but came in empty-handed. Wind conditions were not ideal this weekend, as we had some North winds pick up early in the morning.

We are not seeing much action on the jigs, but there is a good chance of landing a few nice quality fish if you put in the work and focus on multiple rock structures/areas. We had a nice handful of Amberjack, yellowtail, grouper, and snapper this week. We had one Amberjack close to 80 pounds. Most of this jigging action came from San Luis, Vinorama, La Fortuna, and Palmilla.

Most boats fished closer to shore this week with live and dead sardines. On most days, we were able to land Sierra (Spanish Mackerel) limits. Within the same area, a few pompanos, snapper, and grouper were also caught. The best action came throughout the shorelines of Hilton, The Weston, and Palmilla. Some jacks and small roosters were also spotted in the mix while trolling live sardines and caballitos. We have seen live sardines almost every morning. The bait guys continue to net them around the jetty rock structures adjacent to the marina. No marlin or dorado were reported in our area this week…Good Fishing, Brian

Visitors go to Cabo year-round looking for sunshine and beaches, and fishermen head there for fishing. Sometimes, fishing is more of a challenge, as it is when the fish are reluctant to bite. This past week, for instance, our clients got Striped Marlin, Roosterfish, Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna, Sierra, Bonito, and a few Grouper. Even though the bite wasn’t as hot as it was during the season, plenty of fish were still around.
Our air temperature was from 68 to 73 degrees, and our water temp was in the 65 to 70-degree range. Plus, the sun was shining every day!

The 24-foot panga, Panga Anamar II, under the expert guidance of Captain Luciano, took his clients, Mike Hayman and Tim Passini, from Minocqua, Wisconsin, to Chileno. There, they caught Three Sierra on bait. Their journey continued to the Cabeza de Ballena, where they caught One Bonito, also on bait. However, the highlight of their day was the 50-pound Hammerhead Shark they caught and released at the Whale’s Head. This unique, incredible experience left them in awe, but they admitted they might not want to repeat it!

Captain Orlando and Mate Jesus, on the “LA BRISA,” a 31-foot Bertram, took their clients James Young and Zachary McDonald to the 1150 Spot. The clients’ satisfaction was evident as they caught and released a 100-pound Striped Marlin, which was exactly what they had hoped for. They left the boat with high praise for the captain and mate and their excellent skills. Their fishing experience was great.

Captain Bruce M. and Mate Carlos Santos welcomed Chandra Hart and Dereck Wischmey aboard the “TIBURON,” a 31-foot Bertram. They traveled outside the 1150 and the 95 Spots where they caught and released One 120-pound Striped Marlin on a mackerel. That was the fish they had targeted so they were very excited to have succeeded in getting one. Good going to everyone aboard!

On the “BILL COLLECTOR,” a 32-foot Cabo Express, Captain Niko and Mate Erick met their group from Idaho, Jacob Prochaska, Owen Sweeney, and Porter Garza, and suggested they head to the Pozo Cota, where the best of the fishing had been found. The anglers caught One Ladyfish, Two Red Snapper, and One Sheepshead on bait. While it wasn’t the most productive of days, it was certainly a fun day.

From Virginia came a group of fun-loving fishermen who chartered the “CHASIN TAIL,” a 62-foot Viking, Aiden Wells, Alex Sherman, Chris Osentowski, Eli Hocking (9-years-old), Evan Wells, Franklin Osentowski, John Hocking, Scott Hocking, Travis Wells, and Vadim Sherman. With Captain Pepe, and Mates Dulce, Ulices and Ramon running the boat to see that they enjoyed their day, laughter and fun filled the air with their camaraderie.  They caught One Sierra on bait and One 35-pound Grouper. They all wore smiles throughout the day.

Cindy Masmar, Craig Masmar, Patricia Schuknecht, and Schoen Schuknecht selected the 35-foot Bertram, the “VALERIE,” with Captain Roberto Sandez and Mate Salvador Flores running the show. They caught a variety of fish from One Sierra and Eighteen Bonito on bait at the Gaspareno to a Roosterfish at the Old Lighthouse.  They enjoyed the day and learned a lot about fishing the different species.
