Imperial Beach (including the 9 Mile Bank)
12.19.23 -The yellows bit yesterday. They have been moving around the flats between the pier and the Coronado Islands. Sometimes they are up on the surface and sometimes they are being metered down 100-feet or more. Having a surface iron rig AND a yoyo iron rig ready to go at a moment’s notice, as well as having some live mackerel might be a good choice too if you want to successfully catch the yellows. Maybe give slow trolling a couple of mackerel a shot as well – one on the surface and one with a 16-oz. sinker.
Rockfish is the best fishing right now and the 9 Mile Bank is the best bet. Guys dropping down in 400 to 700 feet of water are producing lots of bocaccio, bank perch, green spots, and many more species.
There are some sheepshead here as well for the guys fishing with shrimp.
Inshore bass fishing isn’t very good right now. The sand bass bite at the IB Pipe is probably your best bet to catch bass. You might get a few sculpin, and maybe a halibut or two if you are lucky! …Fish Dope

Good numbers of big bonito in the 5 to 10-pound class around the Punta Banda area, as well from the coast down to Santo Tomas.
Local pangas are dragging Nomad DTX Minnows or Rapalas and doing quite well. No yellowtail recently but plenty of action on those big bones.
Rockfish action down at Santo Tomas is excellent with big reds being the primary catch there. Most are scoring limits with little effort. …Fish Dope
San Quintin
Partly sunny and a bit cooler with an onshore breeze off and on, with the first rains forecast to arrive by Wednesday. An area of low pressure looks to be approaching from the west in what could be a very active weather pattern for our region over the next several days.

Important legislative breakthrough in the protection of species destined for sport fishing!
With 442 votes in favor/0 against/1 abstention, this week, the reforms to Articles 68 and 132 of the LGPAS were approved! They were presented in the Marco Puppo by the Federal Deputy Cámara de Diputados to prohibit the marketing of species intended exclusively for sport fishing and would eliminate the incidental fishing margin.
With this joint effort by Gobierno del Estado de BCS lawmakers and promoters of sport fishing, we protect the rational exploitation of marine species and the economic livelihood of the families that depend on this activity of great tourist importance!…FONMAR

Wahoo, Dorado, and Tuna! Week of Dec. 17, 2023

With Christmas fast approaching, we continue to see light crowds of anglers, which is normal for this time of year. The weather has been ideal as we are still experiencing sunny days with temperatures in the mid-80s. This week, we had a few days with winds from the north; though we were still able to fish with no problem.
The most productive action was between Gordo and La Fortuna. La Fortuna, Cardon, and Punta Gorda have shown substantial numbers of nice-sized dorado and wahoo. Again, the fleet usually began their day by trolling Rapalas and rigged ballyhoo. This week, most boats were able to catch their dorado limit early in the morning, allowing them to release many others throughout the day. Using the same technique allowed them an excellent opportunity to hook a nice-sized wahoo. On Wednesday, one of the boats closer to Punta Gorda was able to hook and land four wahoo back-to-back while trolling Rapalas. These were nice-sized wahoo, with three of them weighing over 40 pounds and one weighed closer to 60. We did notice a more consistent bite on the Rapalas this week. Wahoo was also being hooked while boats were slow trolling live caballito or dead ballyhoo, and at times on cast jigs. The dorado bite was phenomenal this week! They are all over the place, and it has been common to hook more than one at a time as they are travelling in big groups. Most of these dorado are over 15 pounds. We saw many in the 30 to 40-pound class, which contributes to a great fight with light tackle. For some reason, this group of fish have shown to be large but thinner than usual.
The yellowfin tuna bite at the Gordo was more consistent this week. Most hookups have been coming later in the day and many of the local pangeros and commercial anglers have been doing afternoon trips, which have shown to be more productive. Most of the tuna landed were over eighty pounds. The preferred bait has been dead sardina and squid strips, as the sardina supply this week was very spotty. We did have some days with limited numbers of sardina and many of the bait guys have been looking as far away as Palmilla and Club Regina. The marlin bite on the Pacific side has been great, but we are only seeing a few scattered striped marlin on local grounds off of San Jose del Cabo. Inshore, there have been a few sierra and smaller roosterfish around, but other than that there has not been much going on. As for bottom fishing, it continues to be slow, with some occasional snappers and groupers. …Good Fishing, Brian Brictson
