We saw decent signs of bluefin. There weren’t many surface signs but we were able to mark the few we saw around 150’. We hooked one off a flat fall rigged with heavier hooks and leader. We haven’t gotten a weight, but we based it off the one we hooked and landed and they have to be bigger fish. We were very glad we had the heavier tackle this time around…

MPE Tournament Kicks Off 2021 Baja Season
It was a long wait since the First Marina Puerto Escondido Tournament took place in 2019. Team “TAG,” the overall winner of first place in 2019 returned seeking a repeat performance only to be nudged out of the “release” top spot by the time of catch in the release division by newcomer “Team La Chingona.”

WINNERS and WHINERS
Thirty Teams scoured the waters surrounding Marina Puerto Escondido in search of yellowtail, dorado, yellowfin tuna, and billfish (sailfish and striped marlin). Although not everyone was successful, they all had their chances and were determined to redeem themselves on Sunday.

Thirty local and visiting teams completed their paperwork and plunked down their final payments for the entry fee and brown bag jackpot for the Marina Puerto Escondido Tournament.

There are also some big schools of nice jack from Punta Colorado to La Salina and a ton of “micro” bait that they have been feeding on. Most of this has been taking place a little later in the day. On most days it has started around noon and lasted until about three. If you see the birds, you will find the fish. They are from about 1/2 mile to 2 miles out. Throwing sardina to the fish seemed to work for some groups as they wanted the bait, but others didn’t. You could tell a few groups were more in the spawning mode, but those that wanted to play were overly aggressive.
