Billfish: Cabo is experiencing fabulous fishing right now, in what should traditionally be a slow time for anglers going out, boats were fully booked many days; no more slow season in Cabo! Not only do we have fish, but it’s also a nature show out there, while sportfishing anglers can see, whales, dolphins, turtles and sea lions. Bull Ring
There is a little bit of bird school activity outside the kelp line, hard to tell if it was bonito, mackerel, or bass. Birds were working it and there were some fish boiling under them. 90% chance this was anchovy and mackerel.…Fishdope.com
Coronado Islands / Rockpile / Lower 9 Mile Bank / Upper Finger Bank
Surface fishing is slow. No yellowtail, bonito, or barracuda.
Lings are biting at the Rockpile along with various types of red rockfish and whitefish. Live mackerel is the hot bait for the lings.
Good fishing for lings, reds, bocaccio the Lower 9 in 500-750 feet.
Ensenada
Holding steady down here too.
Slight chance for a yellowtail on yoyo iron on the west side of Todo Santos Island and at San Miguel Reef. Probably worth a shot to check Punta Banda too. Depth is 150 to 250 feet.
Some big bonito are still around. Try trolling rapalas or DTX minnows around Todos Santos and Punta Banda. Watch for bird schools.
Excellent fishing for reds and other mixed red rockfish happening at San Miguel and various rockpiles off the weather side of Todos Santos in 350 to 600 feet of water. Trips running long to Santo Tomas are scoring lings and big reds. …Fishdope.com

FONMAR participates in mangrove cleaning day in La Paz, BCS, Mexico.
The “Guardianas of the estuary El Conchalito” collective, along with personnel from the Coordination of the Fund for the Protection of Marine Resources (FONMAR) led by José Lizandro Olachea Burgoin, participated in the mangrove cleaning day in the municipality of La Paz, held Tuesday, December 20, 2022.
With the support of other agencies such as CONANP, ZOFEMAT and INVI, and the environmental conservation groups CostaSalvaje and NOS Noroeste Sustentable A.C., garbage collection tasks, pruning of salt pine trees and removal of feces were carried out on a surface of little more than five hectares in the mangrove area.
Fernanda Villarreal González, Director of the State Housing Institute; María Isabel Hernández Ramírez, liaison for Communication and Environmental Education of the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP); and Celeste Ortega, CostaSalvaje Mangrove Conservation Manager.
The Director of FONMAR, Martín Inzunza Tamayo attended the start of these cleaning tasks, endorsing the commitment of the Governor of the State, Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, with those activities that aim to improve the quality of life of the Baja Sur population through a management efficient and responsible for resources.

Conception Bay\Mulege
Snook are currently at the mouth of Mulege river with a nice 20 pounder caught by kayak and well as small cabrilla. Dorado bite was slow on Sunday Full Moon. We also hooked a large jack close to shore. After the release, an 8-foot hammerhead ate it right next to the boat. I went trolling the bay today with impressive results. Lots of snapper and a decent cabrilla. Lots of bait balls with medium to large rooster fish.
Went outside Bahia Concepcion
About ten miles off the point lots of 8-12-pound dorado along scum line in the current break along with jumbo size skippies. Went inside where bait was getting blown up by birds and fish.
Caught a big rooster and pargo Amarillo. Saw a marlin close getting in on the action. Infestation of needlefish and Mobula rays everywhere…Nathan Burbey/Casa Concepción

Typical winter weather has hit Baja with minimal disruption. The wind was cooperative most days allowing 9 out of 10 boats to hit the holiday beach scene at Coronado Island. Fishing has really taken the back seat to just about every activity especially when you mix in the last few shopping days before Christmas!
The full shift to bottom fishing for yellowtail has yet to begin. Maybe some New Year resolutions will hinge around starting that attack.
The hand line commercial guys are bringing in red and yellow snapper. Harbor breakwater lure and bait casters are tangling with sierra, barracuda, and football sized roosters!

East Cape
Puerto Los Cabos
One week before Christmas, and as usual we saw slightly fewer tourists arriving, a lull before the Holiday Season rush. A cold front also pushed in the past few days, we saw low temperatures down into 58-degree range and highs reached only 76 degrees, as skies were cloudy at times early before sun came through later in the day. Winds were from the north most of the week, laying down some over the weekend.
Ocean swells were very slight, water temperature slowing cooling, now averaging 77 to 78 degrees. Bait supplies have been somewhat limited past couple of weeks, though we have seen schooling caballito rebound some, supplies of ballyhoo and slabs of squid have been fairly steady. Still no reports of sardinas being found within range of local commercial pangeros.
The most productive action recently was found between Cardon and Punta Gorda, all within a couple miles of shore. This is where good numbers of dorado up to 15 lb. were found, as well as wahoo and yellowfin tuna. Wahoo were a bit more elusive this past week, spooky from spear gun pressure as well as normal boat traffic, though some nice wahoo were accounted for, we saw a couple of very impressive fish in the 60 to 70 lb. class. Though average wahoo were in the 20 to 40 lb. range. The ‘hoo were striking on trolled baits, as well as rapalas and at times on cast jigs.
Yellowfin tuna action has been very spotty for the past month now, though this week we saw more tuna action than during previous weeks. Mainly near Cardon, but also on Iman and even close off of Punta Gorda. A couple of charters were lucky and accounted for as many as four yellowfin in a morning. We saw weights up to 70 lb., with average tuna landed being in the 20 to 60 lb. class. Not a consistent bite though, one day we saw a handful and the next we would see one. They hit mainly on the strips of squid, but a few were taken on baits rigged for wahoo, such as ballyhoo or caballito. Some charters have been able to chum up their own chihuil baits, which can be candy at times for wahoo, but also a lot of fishing time can be used up to try to obtain them.
Marlin bite is red hot on the Pacific but we are only seeing a few scattered striped marlin on local grounds off of San Jose del Cabo. Inshore there have been a few sierra and smaller roosterfish found, but other than that not much going on. Same for off the bottom, a few bonito and triggerfish and a handful of leopard grouper.
Typically this is the time of year where we start to see improved action off the shallow rock piles. Though with the dorado and wahoo biting, most anglers are opting to target them…Good Fishing! Eric
